Adding additional lighting (strobes)
You said that you can have amber lights as your only legal light, therefore you could not put them in the rear. Well, what if you bought a strobe light kit but put yellow lights in your reverse light slots. You can get all sorts of different colored bulbs. Yellow being one of them.

The current light bar I have is similar to this: http://www.whelen.com/details_prod.p...59&prod_id=259
however I dont think the brand is Whelen.
The reason I dont want to go with a bigger or attached light bar is because 1) this is still my own personal truck and 2) I have SERIOUS low head room in my garage. There is a steel I beam that supports the floor above the garage and my truck only has about 3 inches of clearance under it. Yes if I had a nickle each time I hit my head on the celing getting in my truck in the morning I would be a rich man!
I figured adding some addtional lights in the tailgate or above/below the existing tail lights would be the better solution all the way around.
Several manufacturers now have extremely low profile LED light bars out on the market with many more coming. I've seen several different widths, right down to about the width you're running now. Star has one that's barely 2 inches tall for police & fire vehicles that's wild. That might allow you to leave it on full time. The disadvantage? Mondo expensive. They do get one's attention though and they draw next to nothing for power.
