Alternator job

So, I need to replace my alternator on my 2000 F150 3.4. How difficult a job is this - anything unique I need to look out for?

It's easy, go with a rebuilt unit from the auto part store,, they're cheaper, and they usually carry a life time warranty.

how many miles do you have,,, if you've never changed your belt, you might want to go ahead and do that as well since you're going to take it off anyways.

Thank you sir! Before I get that far, can you tell me how I can be sure I have a bad alternator instead of a bad voltage regulator?

The regulator is built into the altenator.

go to your local autoparts store,, they will do a diagnostic test of your electrical system... while you're there you can pick up all of the parts. Make sure you look at the alternator, and check to ensure you have all of the socket sizes needed to finish the job... sucks having to go to the store after you've started.

good luck

Replacing the alternator is a pretty easy job. Takes about 1 hour total, from beginning to end, even with a beer break.
