Does anybody happen to know where the octane adjust is on a '01 4.6. I just moved to a town at 7200ft. from one of 1000ft. The truck acts like it is misfiring but I just put new plugs in it less than 3000 miles ago. somebody told me that that adjuster would help the engine. Thanks for any help.
The octane adjust is programmed into the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). Only by reprogramming the computer can you adjust the octane. However, this shouldn't be necessary. Most likely you haven't calibrated your MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor yet. To do this, drive the truck rather hard, at least half throttle while accelerating (up slight inclines works best). This will allow the PCM to get a reading on the amount of air coming in to the engine and adjust the barometric pressure calculation. It is expecting more air right now than it is getting and adding too much fuel to the engine. Good luck!
If your reffering to the Spout Plug it is a white plug in a black socket toward the right rear of the engine bay.
Removing it will retard the timing 2 to 3 degrees but you will have no advance.
This is only to test that the ECM is able to control the timing and not used for your intention. I believe removing it will also bring in a CEL lamp.
If your going to be there for sometime either wait it out for the ECM to readjust or boot the ECM from scratch but it will still take some time for it to settle in, then you have the reverse of this back at lower elevations.
