03 Supercrew Speedometer Problem

I've read about the odometer fix, but how about the speedo? My brothers sc speedo quit the other day. It just points to 100/160 and stays there. Of course he only got powertrain warranty so they won't cover the panel, and the cost is 400 part/300 labor. serious sickness. he already paid them 100 to diagnose, and they say you can't just buy a used panel and install it cause it won't be read through diagnostics or whatever.

Any suggestions?

Try the HEC test mode, to see if the gauge sweeps. This will tell if it is a problem with the gauge itself ( sweeps, but goes back to 100 ).

If it does not sweep, then it could be 2 things .
1. Still a problem with the gauge itself.
2. Problem with the speedo section of the HEC.

If it is #2, then that is a dealer fix, as the HEC has the codes for PATS.
You could get a guage panel, and install your HEC on it, and see if it fixes it, but if not, you just blew the cash on the gauge panel.

Programming the PATS in the HEC I think uses the WDS unit ( think that is the name of the diag equipment or is it NGS ? ).

Kind of a roll of the dice, just paying the 700 and getting it done right the first time, or trying to locate a junkyard '03 gauge set ( same set mind you Tach / no tach ), and seeing if it is the gauge panel that is the problme. If not, you own another gauge panel.

Hard call....Depends on what the diag told the dealer, if it was the gauge panel or the HEC where the failure is at.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure what the HEC test mode is. The tech spent some time and said it was the panel. I think his only hope is to check the solder connections for a cracked weld.
