CB's use?

Hey guys i put a CB in my truck a while ago but I have noticed that here in Alberta, there isnt a whole lot of people that use them. I can drive on the highway for 2-3 hours and maybe pick up one conversation.

So are there any areas where people still use Cb's lots? Maybe in america?

I live in Texas, but some friends of mine and I were tossing around the idea of putting some in our trucks. We go mudding quite a bit and it's a few miles between places that we go sometimes. Instead of having to call each other on our cell phones, it would make it easier for everyone to hear each other at the same time when we get ready to decide where to go next and all.

I do know of a fairly large ranch down here (the ranch covers about 20 sqaure miles worth of land) that uses CB's in all of their ranch vehicles to keep in touch.

Other than uses like that, I'm not sure how often CB's are used now.

I got out of it decades ago when the skip became so bad. For those that never used CB radios, skip is static and signal bounce usually caused by sunspot activity.

Truckers still use CB radios, with a lot more power than the old ones.
Due to the use of 'single side band' units a regular cheap CB won't pick up the strong narrow transmissions.

So there may be a lot more 'chatter' on the radio than you are hearing. I rode with a trucker buddy last year and on the sidebands there was plenty of yammer between LA and Phoenix.

If you are interested, watch for a CB shop, usually near a large truck stop, and go in and ask the guy what the local hot setup is.

Maybe you're on the wrong channel. Channel 19 is the main channel.

I use it on long trips when there's some sort of traffic accident and traffic starts to get congested. It helped me out a lot in D.C. and Atlanta. The semis keep you updated on what's happening and which of the 8 or 12 lanes to get in ahead of time.

I use it when on the highway and off road. Great tool. I noticed that in the US that the users are a lot more friendly than here in Canada. In romote areas there is not much talk simply because of the lack of big trucks. Also in Canada there is less warning about bears than in the US. You also have to consider that truckers don't normally talk to 4 wheelers. That is what they call cars and pickup trucks. So if you are on a stretch of 2 lane don't expect much unless you see a lot of trucks. The heyday of Smokey and the Bandit are long gone.

i also have mine for work since my dad has them in our semis, we have em in our logging equipment to, b/c its easier to holler on one if ur stuck or need something
plus its a great way to check for smokeys and the CO on the highway

and i think that if you get a CB you should also get a PA speaker they are lots of fun
