The Annoying Little Beeper

Ok, so I am finding myself more and more annoyed all the time by the little beeping unit in my '05 F150. When I turn the truck off and open the door, with the keys still in the ignition, it beeps constantly and drives me nuts. I often like to lock my truck, using the keypad on the door, with the ignition off and keys in it. Sometimes I sit there, talking to someone or something with the door open and it beeps until I go insane.

Does anyone know a quick and easy fix to remove this beeping sound that some moron engineer at Ford decided to torture me with? Please help me. The buzzer is driving me to drinking!

Alaska FX4 I can't agree more with you regarding the annoyance the chime makes when your key is in the ignition. I spent a couple of hours on this website as well as others researching a fix for this and found a posting that detailed taking out the lock cylinder from the steering column and then either taping or bending/breaking off the metal sensing tab that is resident in the hole left by the removed lock cylinder. Here's the instruction:

"OK---might sound a bit confusing but here it goes. Turn your key to the run position,look under the steering column at the plastic cover just below the steering wheel and look for a hole that doesn't have a screw in it and it's just below the key area. If you take a small pocket screwdriver or something like that---push it up into the hole and it pushes a little "plunger" then pull out on your key and this should remove the whole key/tumbler. Now look inside the hole that was left by removing the tumbler and you will see a little metal tab sticking up that makes contact to the key and tumbler. You can either bend it down(but it is kind of spring metal) or you can cut it out of there."

OK--so now I'm excited about this fix as it sounds pretty simple and I can't wait to stop the dinging. I was at work when I found this and couldn't go and try this right away. I called a buddy of mine who has a 2002 F-250 work truck who has cussed at his chime enough to send ten men to hell. I told him what to do via the instructions I had just read and he was in business in literally less than 60 seconds! After he got the lock cylinder out he could easily see the metal tab and he just bent it back and forth a couple of times and it finally broke off. He is now one happy camper.

Now I can't wait to go out and fix my truck. I pull out a rubber plug that is in the hole and stick a pocket screw driver in the hole while I'm rotating the key from "run" to the next click back and I cannot feel anything with the screw driver. I tried looking in the hole and couldn't see anything moving either. Next I called a couple of dealerships to see if anyone in service could give me the hint as it seemed my '05 was not set up exactly the way this fix was supposed to go and received "oh we've never done that here" and a few other lame responses. Finally I called a locksmith and asked them if they had experience with this type of stuff and they indicated they had and even had a diagram of my lock cylinder and the guy was trying to tell me over the phone where to locate the release button. I was never able to "feel" or locate the release at all. I decided I would take the truck to the locksmith and even if I had to give the guy $5 or $10 bucks to pop out the lock cylinder--it would be worth it. After an hour at the locksmith and two different guys working on it, the lock cylinder was still in place. They could not even see the release. I asked them why the access hole was even there and they thought that Ford possibly added some other blockage between the hole and the lock cylinder and that more extensive dissasembly would be necessary. It was the end of the day so I told them to just put everything back together and I would think about what I wanted to do next.

I think I'm going to look at the wiring that is coming down the steering column and locate the wire, (someone on here indicated that they thought it was black w/purple stripe--someone else thought it was black w/pink stripe--close enough) test it and then cut the biatch.

If anyone has had success with this on an '05 please enlighten me as to what the locksmiths and myself were missing regarding removal of the lock cylinder.

Turning off the various chimes is a personal preference.
However, this practice would concern me:

Unless you have a really deep tint on all your windows, that really screams "Take Me!"

Ford put some expense into the chip-in-key anti-theft configuration that is reflected in the sticker price. That habit reduces it back to 'rock-through-the-window' and drive away.

People would be shocked at how many times their unoccupied vehicle is peered into looking for prizes and oppurtunities.
