Stuck in park/no brake lights
Stuck in park/no brake lights
My truck just developed a little problem. It started to not want to go out of park. I also noticed the brake lights don't come on when I press the brake pedal. Running lights, blinkers, and all work fine.
Did a search about this problem. I replaced the brake switch that's hooked to the brake arm, checked the wires that go into the switch and they looked good (wheren't broken or frayed). I checked every single fuse under the dash and under the hood and all where ok except the lighter fuse which didn't work since I bought the truck but I don't smoke so never bothered with it but did replace it yesterday just incase.
I also read about the defective brake pressure switches/sensors but mine must be good if the fuse isn't blown? Does that sensor have anything to do with the brake lights/stuck in park? Also, do I check the wires going to the switch attached to the brake arm with a simple test light or do I need a voltmeter from radioshack?

Ok, went and bought a test light and tested the connector. Test light didn't come on until I wiggled the connector and then the light would blink on and off so I think it might be the connector that is bad and not the switch.
FIXED!
Well I cut the wires to the factory connector and got a nice bright light from the tester off the bare wires. Being able to look closely at the connectors now that I had it out from underneath the dash and in my hand, I noticed that the top wire was frayed where it crimps into the connector but the insulation didn't look damaged when I looked at it when underneath the dash.
I went to radioshack and got some new connectors, some 18 gauge wire, and some heat shrink tubing. I added three inches to the wire so now there's plenty of leeway for when you press the brake pedal you're not tugging on the wire/connection. Brake lights now work and it lets me out of park. All fixed!
