Question Programming NEW Ford keys

When I bought my used 2004 F150 SuperCrew from a local dealer, and the truck only had one key/keyfob with it.

I contacted the dealer about replacement, and they quoted me a price of $100 for the key alone! They said $35 was for the key, and $65 for the "programming" ... anyone know how to program the key themselves??

Thanks, in advance!

you have to have two programmed keys to be able to program the third and so on yourself. Id raise wholly hell at dealership for the second key free. when you get the second key they'll have to erase security access code in pcm and program keys fresh. sorry you'll either pony up the money orget the dealership to give u a key

What self respecting dealer would turn over a vehicle with only one key? I would ask for a second key and free re-programming nicely. If that didn't work, I'd go in there on a busy Saturday and lay into them in the middle of the showroom. Maybe you can try contacting somebody in Ford's customer service dept.? BTW, my extra key only cost me $10, cut and delivered. You're dealer is screwing you twice.

After reading this thread I’m going to program a third key for myself while I can.

Why do dealers let people trade in vels with out the giveing 2 keys and the remotes for the vel, also why do people keep them when they trade ?? I got a ford van one time with a alarm and they had to get the key and remote back from the woman for it.With the new keys on vels now you can't just get one cut like in the old days and most all of them have remotes now on them. The dealers should give the buyer 2 keys and remotes when they sale a car or truck.I got a used car one time and got me a key and a second remote for it. Oh well that's life.

I'm working with the dealership now...just got one of those "Customer Satsfaction surverys" and I put down my complaint about the one key/keyfob.

I will see what I can do about it before having to shell out $100 myself...

The same thing happened to me when I bought my 03 last year, I did raise holy hell and called the General Manager and then they made a new 2nd key for free.

Definately need at least 2 keys to program any others. Good luck getting them to give you a 2nd. Once you do have 2 keys, programming additional keys is pretty easy. Insert the first key into ignition and turn to on position without starting, remove and insert second key within 10 seconds doing the same. Remove the second key and insert the new unprogrammed key and turn to on position. The red led on dash should illuminate indicating that the new key has been programmed. $65 for programming a key is a ripoff! Also, the programming instructions are in the owners manual. I paid $40 for 2 keys at the stealer and programmed them myself.

The problem lies in programming a second key when you have only one key....right?

I did, however, get the dealer to give me two additional keyfobs...don't know how good that will be in the long-run anyway since I think you need the two original keyfobs to program additional units. I'm working with the dealership now to get the second key programmed FREE...

Not to mention, the numeric keypad needs to be reprogrammed, but I do not know the "factory preset" code, which I assume can be determined with a computer diagnostic tool.

What ever happened to the day when keys cost less than $5....

The CODE for the numeric keypad is written on the white/black box mounted up on the firewall just to the left of the brake pedal. It should be a 5 digit code. That code is the factory default and can NOT be changed, however the custom code can. Use the factory code to nuke the old custom code and get what you want in there. DON'T PAY a dime for this!!!! Instructions are in the owners manual.

Two new fobs? Cool, just follow the instructions in the Owner's Manual to program the new fobs. You don't need an OLD "master" fob to program these. Once again, DON'T PAY a dime for this!!!

As for the keys, well, if you don't have two "programmed" keys, Ford has you by the nuts!! Raise wholey hell about getting a used truck w/only one set of keys.

Some people just don't get it. I know it's hard to let go of your old car on trade-in but sheash...keep a set of keys just in case? Come on, what are ya gonna do "borrow it" one night when you need to make a trip to the corner store for milk and bread?

Thanks for the info! I could NOT find the box you were describing...my truck has the Ford aftermarket starter installed, and it is tucked into the rat's nest of wires under the dashboard in the location you described, but there were NO CODES, just serial numbers. There are two sets of wires going through the firewall into the engine bay, but those are fir the alarm siren and another module under the hood (I think the hood switch sensor)....any other hints on finding it? I'm assuming the factory module was replaced by the aftermarket Ford remote engine starter...does this also affect the code?

I figure I would make an appointment to get the 2nd (and 3rd) key programmed, and have them pull the factory 5-digit code at the same time so I can do the reprogramming MYSELF! Same with the 2nd and 3rd keyfob I already have.

Thanks!

I was browsing the web and found an inexpensive site to buy OEM keyfobs, and one site for keys and/or keyfobs:

Keyfobs ONLY:
http://www.keylessremotesforless.com/index.htm

Keys & Keyfobs:
http://www.keylessride.com/
http://www.streetkeys.com/

NO, the aftermarket units can not replace the CSM because it controls otherthings as well. I too have an aftermarket Ford Deluxe Vehicle Security & Keyless Entry module installed (it's the black box w/the green sticker at the very TOP of the picture). I suggest you double check for that box again. Most alarm guys will put aftermarket alarms in the same general area as the CSM because all the wires they need for the hookup are right there!!!

The box is there, you may have to move the driver seat backward and lay on your back to look up at it. It's just above the main wiring harness (big fat sucker about 1 1/2" thick) that comes in from the engine bay. Check out the pic. The code location is circled in red. Remember it's WAY up there, almost up at the top of the firewall.

The only other possible thing I could think of is that the code is on the backside of the box for some of the earlier models. This pic was off of a 2003.

When I got my Ford Gold system installed I had left one key with them and when I picked it up they had made a new key. They didn't need the second key to program it,I took the wifes key when I got notice that they needed it,but they had already made a second key for it before I got back to them.

UPDATE: TonyPTX

Well....I went out to the garage again (much to my wife's dismay) and looked for the module. This is what I found:

There was another recessed area, once again only factory bolts and nothing more. The only thing I can figure is that the Ford Motor Compnay Remote starter and security module does replace the CSM.

Did I mention mine was a 2004??

Any other ideas Tony?? I go into the dealer on Wednesday.
