'99 speedometer+tailgate

'99 speedometer+tailgate
my '99 4x4 's speedometer works only when it wants to. either working fine, or blacked out. maybe i just don't understand how to operate it, but i think it is faulty. my locking tailgate has a way of locking itself too. you never know from one time to the next. its a pain to jump out and try to open the tailgate to find it locked, then have to shut off the truck and get key to open it. is there a trick to it? if not, how can i disable a lock that i don't need?

Do a search for intermittent speedometer, there is a very good post in here somewhere that has many pictures and the way to repair that. It a broken solder joint on the board that the LCD is mount to.
Your tail gate is a real bummer that I too fought for a long while before I decided to tear into it and it was easy to fix. Remove the panel on the back of the tailgate and work the lock with your key and you will see that there is a little arm that goes up and over a lever on the center of the locking movment, just put a bend in it to increase the pressure of that arm, did that to mine and the tailgate hasn't locked itself since.
I remove the lock system, very easy to do. After you remove the tailgate panel, pop the two little plastic clip open and lift out the threaded rods, then remove the two nuts that hold the latch in the tailgate and it will fall on ground if your are not holding on to it. Then on the bench work the system and watch what happens and all will be clear.
