Mods and your trucks computer!

Can mods to exhaust and intake and other parts of the engine throw engine codes. according to a local mechanic it can. because it throws off all the stock computers numbers and the computer thinks that something is wrong with the truck so the trucks computer starts to send codes! is this or can this be true!

They can, if the parts are not engineered as a replacement for the stock parts, installation instructions not followed and trying to fit an exhaust system without putting the sensors back in there locations or trying to delete a part that the computer can see is missing etc.
This is a general answer to your general question.

Oh yeah they can. I have a Superchips performance chip (bought it before tuners were available for my '97) and it occasionally throws me a code. Since gas prices have skyrocketed in Southern California I haven't had the chip in for almost a year now and I'm still getting occasional codes (I'm pretty sure it's from the K&N FIPK II). All my engine modifications are designed for my truck and CARB (California Air Resources Board) certified for emissions standards and they still throw me codes. I just make sure that my codes are clear whenever I go in for my bi-annual smog check (I only get a code 2 or three times a year).

If the mods are done properly you will have no problem. My truck is heavely modifyed and has never had a check engine light or code set. To be exact Mike Troyer fixed several drivability problems in my truck that were there when it was factory stock. I could not even think of driving the truck in stock tune!!!

It depends on exactly what you modify. Yes, absolutely, certain parts throw codes. Many typical bolt-ons don't, but some require custom tuning...example MAFs.

Hey thanks for all the Replies!

Now I am not worried so much about them! But I plan to follow up on them when I get them! If I add a Intake with a Throttle body spacer and a 3" Exhaust, can a power programer help keep the codes to a minimum?

Any Tuner(person that tunes chips or programmers) that takes all the iformation on your trucks mods into consideration should be able to give you any number of power building programs that will NOT cause your vehicle to start throwing codes. If they can't then they shouldn't be selling power enhancing products. But then again I have used Mike Troyer from day 1 so maybe he just has me spoiled or something.....If you want the best, go with the best, go with Troyer Performance...

A replacement intake kit and a properly engineered exhaust should not throw any codes. The chip/tuner doesn't just fix codes, it should be properly programmed for those modifications that need additional attention. The throttle body spacer is junk in my opinion. Make a list of "ALL" of your potential modifications and ask your tuner if any of them require additional programming.
