I am going to be adding some extra back up lights on my truck and wanted to run a separate wire to the back of the truck. I am going to use a relay and a 3 position switch so the lights can be on if the key is in the run or accessory position, or if the truck is in reverse, and the last position will be off. My question is what color is the wire that runs the factory installed backup lights and where is that wire under the dash or under the hood. I have a 97 f150 4.6.

 

The reverse lamp wire that runs the reverse lamps on your 97 is black with a pink tracer. You can pick it up at the DTR (digital trans range sensor) on the left side of the trans....pin 3 or pin 11 depending on build date...
