Fog Lights Not Working

The problem just started today (very wet weather). I pulled the fuse and, sure enough, it's blown. I thought it'd be a simple replacement but, with the replacement came no fogs. Be reminded, I *HAVE* done the fog light modification.

With the fuse pulled, I have normal activity minus the fact that the fogs aren't working. With the new replacement fuse installed, the heads immediately turn on when I click the switch to Parking Lights and continue to stay on when I click over to the regular headlight setting.

I haven't pulled bulbs or anything yet as I suspect it's more simple than that (and my bulbs are siliconed in place because of moisture issues).

HELP!

Update:

I went ahead and pulled both fog bulbs out and both were blown. I was able to replace with the stock 9145's and they work now BUT... now when I click to the parking light setting, the headlights come on and stay on into the headlight setting.

I've checked fuses beneath the hood and in the passenger compartment panel. The fuse for the fogs was the only one that I viewed to have been bad...

HELP.

SECOND UPDATE:

I've checked every fuse that has anything to do with the lighting systems on the truck and, all appear to be good. Further, I've pulled two relays and swapped them with the 'horn' relay just to confirm or deny if they were bad... all seem good.

Here are my thoughts at this point -- please give me some input/opinions!:

-- Bad switch. The Xenarcs wouldn't be turning on in the parking position unless the circuit was being completed by a switch.

-- Bad relay somewhere else?

-- Could the Xenarc relay be causing a problem?

-- Water gremlins have caused a short elsewhere.

HELLLLLLLLP!

When my mom had her durango, water was the culprit as far as shorting out the foglights. I dumb on all of your other suspects, but I just thought I would throw this out there to you.

Thanks japickar. Water seems to be a very serious suspect in this little malfunction but, I've still been unable to isolate the problem.

Someone, on another site, said that the foglight mod and Xenarcs weren't compatible but, up until today, mine worked fine with ZERO problems. I blow a fuse and it's doesn't work now... very weird.

RP - I have the exact same problem that I am trying to figure out!!! Except I do not have the Xenarcs and only one of my foglights are working. I did spend the $60+ on a new headlight switch and it fixed the headlight problem the night I installed it, but the next morning I turned on the lights and once again the headlights are coming on in the parking light mode. I have checked all fuses and bought a new foglight relay (have not installed yet) - my issue with the foglights is that the one that is not working is only getting about 11.5 - 11.7 volts. When I installed the new headlight switch, it did not fix the foglight.

I too have the foglight mod and have been running it for a few years without any issues. Every now and then I would have the same issue you had where I would blow a fuse and then it ended up blowing both foglight bulbs.

That was going to be my next move - cut out the connectors for the foglight mod and return everything to stock and see what happens.

RP,

Two blown bulbs AND a blown fuse? VERY interesting. Based on what you've reported, I'd be looking for a bad switch. I avoided the fog light mod on mine because I've seen too many problems with Ford headlight switches in our plow trucks crapping out due to the increased current load of the plow lights added to the system. (And we're not talking much for draw here.) Remember, you've added (fog light) bulbs that draw more current, then piped them through a portion of the switch not designed to handle even the stock bulbs.

Unfortunately, trouble shooting electrical problems over the internet doesn't work very well. If I was down there (enjoying the sun instead of the snow), I could help out more. I would suggest a new (unmodified) headlight switch as a starter though. If you want, call me Sunday at home. Maybe we can try a few things over the phone. The number's in the book. Good luck!

Thanks 2... I might not let it be a problem honestly.

I am on the brink of letting this truck go and, if that becomes the case, I'm probably not going to worry about it...

It is just weird how I have been running this mod for so long and only had the issues with the blowing fuses and bulbs - always thought it was issues with water getting in the fogs. But now the switch is messed up and then when I put a new one in, it messed up immediately.

RP,

You looking at a new one too? I ordered an '05 Monday night. Hopefully it will be in before the end of the year. Talk about a Merry Christmas! Hope all goes well for you.

Yes. The autolamps seem to be functioning correctly.

Well, I just brought my truck back to FULL STOCK (minus the radio) and, guess what? With the stock heads/corners, everything is working EXACTLY right...

I guess it DID have something to do with the Xenarcs!

Thanks for the assistance guys... I might have an 05 tomorrow.

RP, did you remove the foglight mod too?? The reason I ask is that I do not have the Xenarcs but have the same problem.
