Aux. Rear Lights

Does anyone use this type of aux. rear lights...

(photo of lights mounted in a housing around the receiver hitch)

...or are y’all using individually mounted lights?

The hitch system looks nice, but it also looks like it might get in the way of the safety chains. I just can’t tell from the photo.

I saw those, looked ok, failry simple. couldn't tell how far they stick out though.

are you using the factory chain hooks? i know people that cut those off and weld others on elsewhere.

i personally just went with the cheaper Pilot bu/lights. mounted on the hitch and out of the way. they are low profile so with the body lift the worked perfect between the hitch and bumper.

I'm not using the factory chain hooks (loops under the bumper). I didn't have the tow package on my truck so installed a Draw-tite receiver. I attach the safety chains to the receiver. I also use a locking receiver pin (which is bulkier than the usual pin w/ the snap-ring) so the chains are sometimes hard to get on and off the receiver. I didn't want the lights to make things worse.

Anyway, to make a short story long, thanks for the input. I'm always looking for good options.

I got one of these, and promptly returned it after one test fitting.
On the Factory Class III hitch, it blocked all the chain points both on the bumper, and on the hitch ( Draw tight might be different here ). It did fit up nice, but in trying to use it with a trailer, it was a big PITA. The other part I never got to was if the reciever needed a longer hitch bar to extend past the light kit. When I saw my chain points were that burried, I gave up and went with a set of Truck Lite LED backup lamps.

I have them on a switch, one it to the parking lamp power, the other to the backup circuit on the tailer harness. This way I can have the SPDT switch in the position of constatnt run ( parking lamps ) or on with reverse ( backup circuit on the trailer harness ).

Good luck

SSCULLY,

Thanks for your experience with these lights. It was exactly the situation I was afraid of, so now I'll look elsewhere.

Cheers,

If you don't want to go the route ( read expense ) of doing the LED backup lamps from Truck Lite, then a simple set of clear fog lamps will do the trick.

A bit of wiring, and you'd be all set. Same basic install either way. I did the LED backups, so I could take the backup circuit from the factory 7 pin harness directly. The LED lamps are 1 AMP, so it is not a heavy draw on the backup trailer circuit. I don't know if the backup circuit would take too well to a set of 55 W driving lamps ( 110W ~ 10 AMPs ).

Another member just did the clear fog route, running the circuit from the front of the cab:

Good luck.
