intermitent total loss of power

I am having an intermitent problem with my '94 F150. When turning the key to start, all power is lost in the truck and the starter is not engaged. I have to play with the key many times before it comes back on. The radio resets to 12:00 and all station settings are lost so it appears that power loss is to everything.

The ignition switch does not have any obvious damage and I cannot recreate when I have a tester available.

Any ideas? I know I am going to get stuck one of these days.

starter cable

short to ground on starter cable. take a look at your battery line and trace it all the way to your starter checking for abraised edges and shorts.

this is where i would start.
