Clearing PATS codes on used cluster?

I decided to replace my cluster to solve my speedo problem.
Has anyone ever replaced their instrument cluster. Do I need to see the dealer to program the new cluster to the truck or is there a "how to" on the web? I have heard that if it is just installed without the codes being cleared than the truck won't start.

There are people on ebay that sell used clusters and claim that they send you the info on programing the cluster yourself. I have never seen it first hand though. As far as I know the dealer has to do it. The old info has to be erased and it has to be programmed with the new info. I don't know how else that could be done other than using a NGS or WDS.

It depends on how much of the cluster you are replacing.
If you are just doing the gauges, and re-using your HEC, then no need to have the dealer do anything. The HEC is on the back, and can be removed from the gauge panel, and re-used.

If you think the Speedo problem is in the HEC, then yes it is a case of re-programming is needed.

Thing is, the millage is also in the HEC, so what Jeff L posted some time back, is they send out the old HEC with the replacement one, to a Ford Auth repair center to have the millage programmed into the HEC, less they have a bunch of ultra low millage 2000s F-150s running around Don't know if Ford has opened this up a bit or not, but now it could be different.

Thank you both. I am not going to go with the EBAY route and try to escape it cheep. My friend that works for a ford garage is going to take it in and see about a replacement (rebuilt) from FORD. He is telling me that they are somewhere in the $150 range. (?) who knows
I'll let you know how it turns out. thanks again

Question Tach/gauges for 99?

I'm wanting to install a set of gauges w/tach in my 99 4.2. Anybody know if I can just switch the parts on the back of the clusters for propper PATS and odometer readings? Also the battery was left unhooked for too long and the security system now prevents me from starting it. Any ideas aside from the tow truck ride to my local dealer? Thanks in advance.

If you have a Tach in now, then the swap is the gauge panel only.

If you do not have a Tach, then it is a case of needing to get a HEC along with the new gauge panel, and have the PATS key programed and the millage reading into the HEC. ( if I am correcly recalling the 99 having a digital odometer, thought that was the first year ).

Unless Ford has changed the policy in the past year, the Dealer can't re-program millage, that is done by the outside HEC contractor. That is what I got from Jeff L some time ago, but it may have changed by now ???

It might be cheaper and easier to install an aftermarket Tach in a steering column pod if you really want one.

Good luck either wya you go.
