Check engine light

My check engine light came on. i went to the gas station and drove off and forget to screw on my gas cap on and was wondering if that can cause my check engine light to come on, and how long does it ususally stay on?

Yes that can cause the check engine light to come on. The OBD II system is so senstive that the lack of a sealed gas tank will produce slightly different emissions. It will take up to 10-15 drives (you can't just start it 15 times in a row, as the OBD II takes time to get a reading) to turn the check engine light off. However if you want to know for sure you could always vist you closest Autozone, who will code scan it for free.

Actually, a loose or missing gas cap will cause a P0455 code, Gross Evaporative System Leak. Nothing sensitive about it at all.

The CEL will reset after several drive cycles. if you are in a hurry, disconnect the battery for 15 minutes.
