Kill Switch Using Lighter

I'm planning to install a kill switch to prevent my 2001 f150 from being started unless the proper sequence is used. Can anyone see why this set up will not work?

1. Will interrupt the fuel pump circuit at the side impact switch located behind the kick panel on driver's side. This interrupt will be via a dedicated relay contact.

2. The relay coil circuit consists of the following; +12V is sourced from the ignition switch (pink 12 guage wire coming out of ignition switch, which turns on with ignition), the relay coil is then next in line, followed by using the lighter as a switch to activate the coil ( to use the lighter as switch the supply to the lighter must be disconnected and reconnected to supply ground to the relay coil. (The lighter element must be shorted))

3. Use the second set of contact on the relay to have the relay hold itself activated as long as the ignition switch +12v is present.

When the key is turned on .... push the lighter ...... relay is picked .. relay contacts close ... one set completes fuel pump circuit .... other set hold relay picked .. turn key to start truck .... when key is turned off relay drops ...... contacts open .... fuel pump circuit is disabled ......self holding circuit drops.

Anyone see a problem??

The only problem I see is that it is waaaaaay more complicated than it needs to be. Simply splicing a switch into the hot side of the inertial fuel pump switch will accomplish the same thing with fewer "moving parts".

There was a thread on this less than 2 months ago, everybody got out their book and we figured out where to splice and what the switch rating etc needed to be. Try a SEARCH on KILL SWITCH.

Well that would work, and stop you from driving if you had too much to drink

This is the thread on the kill switch :

Don't forget the person trying to steal your truck would need 2 things with this config.

1. Know where the switch is at.
2. A key for your truck to get around the PATS system.

Adding in a relay sounds like a bad idea to me.
The mouse trap you are building might leave you stranded somewhere, and cost you a towing bill, or the wrose part of it, make you leave your truck somewhere until you can get the parts for it, making it a target to get broken into for the stereo or trashed. But that is just my opinion, what you note could be done, but would require changing out the lighter plug for a momentary switch ( or installing this somewhere else ).

Good luck with this, if you decide to move forward on the space shuttle launch procedure kill switch.

I think I saw one of the old James Bond cars for sale on E-bay.....maybe you should just go that route!

Thanks for the feedback your comments are appreciated.

My main reason for doing it this way is YOU NEVER HAVE TO REMEMBER TO TURN THE KILL SWITCH OFF , as it will automatically disconnect when the ignition is turned off.

As for being stranded, it is no different than having the switch go bad in the simple switch system. If it dies, I take off the panel and join the two wires together, or I put in a bypass switch for such an emergency, and flip the switch.

To turn the lighter into a momentary switch to simply provide ground is really quite simple, bend the tabs that hold the lighter in the heating position so that they will contact ground when the lighter is pushed in. Mind you, you destroy the lighter function .... but i"m a non smoker and nobody smokes in my truck.

As for James Bond ..... you see I'm retired .... and have too much time on my hands ..... besides I'd rather be working in the garage instead of painting in the house or watching the moron box.

cheers and have a good day.

Well, since you have all this time; how about a biometric locking device? Retinal scan? Fingerprint?
