Want my fog lights Back

Ok. I did the fog light Mod about six months ago. At the same time I Changed my fog lights to the sliverstars. Everthing worked fine for months. Now I am blowing the fog light indicator/ relay fuse under the dash. I checked my wiring and every thing was tight. (as a side note under advise of an electrician friend I cut the wires and used a wire nut to connect the wires. When I checked everthing I soddered then taped to make sure the connection was right). I also noticed that the fuse blows the instant you turn the light switch to the parking light setting with out trying to turn on the fog lights. Now what

I have had the same problem occur every so often. I used one of those quick connect splicers right behind the headlight switch to allow use of the fogs with parking lights only. However, when mine blows under the dash, it usually also blows the fuse under the hood (for the fogs). Have not figured out why it does this, but it is so infrequent that I have just lived with it.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I would not use a wire nut to secure the wires. For houses/buildings that's fine. In the aviation industry we use solder and then heat-shrink the connection to seal it up. For automotive use I would at least use a butt connector and tape it up or get a butt connector that is heat-shrinkable (commonly referred to as an "environmentally safe butt connector").

What I think your problems really could be a result of are a bad ground connection or too much load for the circuit. I'd check the ground connections first.

Hope this helps...

As a WAG try looking at the parking lamps. Sounds like a dead short. Maybe a wire got pinched or chafed? Switch taking a dump?

If your setup uses a relay, that could be shorting out.

Doug,

Exactly what did you do for the fog light mod? What else did you do just before the fuse started to blow? Did you add any electrical accessories?

I found this on FordTruckWorld.com from user F150for6:

Here is the problem with the Fog lamp mod. The power for the relay is the same source as the power for the indicator. It has a 5 amp fuse. If the contacts anywhere in the circuit are dirty you will eventually draw more than 5 amps. You have to clean the connector contacts, relay contacts, internal contacts inside the switch. The grounds have to be perfect too. Ground #200 is a twin and is for the Fog Lamp indicator and it is located behind the passenger side kick panel. There are two grounds so clean them both. And the Fog Lamp relay ground #102 is located behind the Battery on the firewall in the corner where the fender meets the firewall. The fog lamp relay is located in the Battery Junction Box in the engine compartment.
