My F250 EATS starter!!

I have a '94 F250 w/ the 460 CI motor and 5-speed trans. Even with a new battery, this vehicle has been going thru a starter every 3-7 months. It's always the windings. You can hear the solenoid clicking and if you whack the thing it may start the truck one last time so you can get home and pull the thing out. If anyone has experienced a similar problem, I would be interested to know what the final solution was.

Thanks, Mike

A guess or 2.

Heat is rough on starters. I had a 460 in a 1976 E350 and when I put headers on the truck it started eating starters. Heat from the headers made it a pain to restart when warm and prolly cooked whatever grease was in the bearing.

*A heat shield really helped.*

My experience with the cheapest possible starters available was that I got what I paid for. If that much.

The starter on mine had an external Bendix( or was it solenoid?). It seemed to work better than a friends 1978 LTD w/460 with the "normal" starter, and in fact he replaced it with the truck type and was happy with it.

If you have the type of starter with the external Bendix(solenoid), did you replace that at some point? If not that would be a good place to look. Maybe inquire into whether the type of starter I mentioned will work for you.

Check the battery and starter cables. Repair ends on battery cables tend to not work very well and may contribute to the problem.

Hoped I helped a little.
