Ignition problem

Hey folks. A few months ago my ignition starting acting up. To start the truck I had to turn the wheel to the right and turn the key at the same time. The wheel had to hit the right spot for it to start. Well, at 3:00 a.m. today as I was leaving work I went to start her up and got nothing. I tried all kinds of combinations and still got nothing. It even got to the point where the key wouldnt turn. So I walked the 3 miles home.

I assume that the problem is in the steering column. When the key is turned everything else comes on (radio, dashboard lights, etc.). What should I do? I dont get paid until thursday, but wednesday night I have a very important appointment which is 70 miles away. Can someone tell me how to hot-wire it? I can bring it to the shop on thursday, but will need to get it to the shop. I live out in the country, probably 30+ miles from the nearest autoshop.

Any advice is very appreciated.

You have an ignition switch that is coming apart.

There is a recall that has the dealer replace the switch.

Recall # 95S28

I called some dealerships around the area today & gave them my VIN# and all. They all said that my truck is not one of them being recalled.

The key switch is moving again but its loose. I can turn it all the way forward without a key in it. Ive figured out a way to start it...turn the switch all the way forward, open the hood and touch a screwdriver to the soleniod. It sparks for a second and the truck starts right up. Ill probably just end up rigging a toggle switch from that to the cab of the truck and start it that way. Its about all I can afford at the time.

Post your VIN and I'll check into it.

That VIN does not show to be covered by the recall.

10-1 Odds that it is a lock cylinder actuator broken..
Seen this numerous times on the older F150's..
Requires some disassembly of the column.
A little time consuming, but if you aren't sure, I would recommend paying somebody to do this..

To check if this is it.. take the nuts loose to the column so that it drops down a little. Get a pair of needle nose pliers and located the rod going down the column from the ignition key cylinder to the ignition switch,. when you have moved it as far as it will go with the switch, grab the rod with your pliers and try to nudge it toward the switch.. I bet it will start...

Just my thought from experience with similar symptoms..

Good Luck!!
