Question Turn Signals Gone Funky

Right turn signals, normal. Left turn signals, normal on lane-change mode (lever not locked). In left turn mode, front light is off, rear light flashes fast, like the front was burned out. 4- ways are normal.
Ideas? Clues?
Thanks -
Slugz

Since it works in lane change mode and not full left turn mode, the problem has to be in the turnsignal switch. The contacts for the front light are letting go when you move the lever past lane change mode.

Unhappy Turn SIgnals Gone Funky

Aw, Stantd, do you know how much I didn't want to hear that? I guess logically that would have to be. Sounds like a real pain. Especially if one should blow a bag in the process

Actually it's not that hard of a job. No need to worry about the air bag blowing - there's no more chance of it blowing during this than there would be while driving down the road.

There should be four screws on the bottom side if the housing. unscrew these and the tilt steering lever. Pop the bottom half of the housing off (it also has a few plastic tabs that hold it in place). Then turn the key to the on position. There is a little pin under the tumblers - push it in with a small screwdriver or punch. Grab the key & the ignition tumbkers should now slide out. Pull the top of the plastic steerign column housing off now (you may need to put the tilt lever back in and tilt the wheel to make this easier. Once this is off there are two torx screws that hold the turn signal swictch on (wipers, washer, turn, high / low beams, & hazards all in one switch). Once you get these out, unplug the plugs and plug the new switch in. Replace everything in the reverse order. It shouldn't take longer than 15-20 minutes.

The cost of the switch may give you a heart attack though -
about $100.00 last time I bought one

Good luck

Medic,

Thanks for the reply. Sounds doable. A hundred bucks - wow - the last time I replaced one of these honeys was on my daughter's '80 Mustang. Involved pulling the wheel - no big deal on that one - but wasn't too bad. The switch was around $34.00. How times change...

Glaffer,

Thanks! More to study...
I'll look at it before plunking down a c-note for a new one...

My truck was doing the same thing. It is some type of failure in the multi-function switch. I bought the switch, but the problem went away on its own. It acted up for about 2 weeks then went away on its own. It has been about 1.5 years since the problems.

Bent Six, I like your style. Mine went away, too, but only for a couple weeks.
Found the switch listed from $104 to $54. It is $53.99 at O'Reilly auto parts, Motorcraft brand.
When I get worked past tax time, get the dog to the vet, get my new specs so I can see to do the work - then comes the new switch...

Taxes are done, other squeezies eased up - put the switch in last night. Thanks to you guys, it was a breeze. Whole thing took maybe 15 minutes.
I will take the old switch apart and clean it, and stash it back. I didn't use cleaning it as a primary means of dealing with the problem because I didn't want to have to do it twice in case that didn't work - I'm a bit out in the boonies, and it takes a day or two to get an ordered item in....
Anyways, thanks so much to you guys for your knowledge and your willingness to share it. It made all the difference.

Hey guys,

I am having the same problem with my 97 Expy...My turn signals work if the brake is on, and I work it on and off (hazards dont work either), the only way I could get my stereo to work was to wire it straight to the battery (I have an alpine that requires one wire to be run to the battery, and one to ignition, so it wasn't much trouble). Also, I have found that the only way my windows will roll down is with the key in the ON position, not accessory, and sometimes the auto roll down doesnt work, but most times it does. The windshield washer button works sometimes, but it doesnt take the few extra swipes as normal. I know this sounds like a lot....but I was hoping this switch was my problem too.... Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Dinga

Dinga,

I think you're off in another pasture altogether. I recommend you start a new thread with this message....

Good luck.

Thanks Sluggo....I was hoping it would just be that $54 switch at O'reilly....but this is probably just my luck.
