Not enought volts ???
I had an Avital 3200remote starter installed by BestBuy around the first of the year. They didn't hook the horn up.
When I aksed them about this I was told that the unit does not put out enough power and they would have to install another relay and it would and extra. Is this true or not.
I was going to try and hook this up myself, but I am not sure if I can.

This is true on a ford the wire that is coming off the alarm does not have enough power to sound the horn it will blow the fuse you do need to put a relay in. you can pick them up at any auto parts store it is a 30amp 12v relay to hook it up all you need to do is look at the bottom of the relay the lugs are numbered 30,85,86,87and 87a.Hook 30 to 12v i.e the battery. Hook 85 to alarm out (the wire that goes to the siren).Hook 86 to ground.Hook 87 to the horn.Leave 87a unhooked.this will then sound the horn and the siren if you want just the horn then cut the wire that goes to the siren and bring it stright to 85 otherwise leave it the way it is and splice a wire to it and hook it to 85.
I think it is black to find it get a test light and hook one end to ground and test each wire when you have the test light on the right black wire and you hit the horn the test light will light up then splice in to it rember to put a fuse in line to the wire that you run to the battery.
je3169,
I don't know if I am looking at the wrong wire needed, or it changed between years.
The electrical diagrams on pg 44-1 show a Dark Blue wire leaving the horm switches. This is also connected to the RAP and the central security module. ( also Dark blue ).
This is the wire that goes to the horn relay in the fuse block / relay location under the hood. Connector # 159.
So then a relay is needed to activate the relay ?
I could see the need for the relay if it is connected to the output of the horn relay under the hood ( Yellow Light Green wire leaving the fuse box under the hood; Connector # 136 ),for sounding the horns, but if it were connected to the control side of the horn relay, is it still needed. Guess I don't know what the power output of the alarm is.
In my gallery is the console page, the connector inside the truck is C234 ( grid A3 ) , The connector pinout is on page 31-4, for this one.
If you take a look at page 44-1, it shows what I am looking at, just so you can correct me, I'm all confused
Thanks

There seems to be some confusion here. The output of the Avital unit for for horn should be (-). The Ford horn wire in the steering column is also (-). This wire should be dark blue for most applications & powers a relay and not the horn. There is very minimal power needed for this procedure to complete a circut as you are just supplying a ground to the circut & the (+) is already present.
My Avital unit has never had a problem completing this circut without an added relay.

Thanks I forgot to include that part...
So it is the Dark Blue to the stock horm relay that is being used, not actually adding another relay to the output of the stock horn relay ?
Thansk again for adding in my other question, like I said I got confused, and at the week's end that is not a hard thing to do

Okay, I think the output from the Avital unit for the horn is (-). The good news is that the Ford horn switch is also (-). You shouldn't need any relays.
I have looked up the wiring diagrams & found the following for 97-02 F-150's for the horn wire you are looking for:
97 & 98: dark blue wire in steering column harness
99 - 01: dark blue in brown (6 pin) connector behind the driver side dash
02: yellow / light green in steering column harness. (I'm not sure if this one in (-) or (+) so you'll have to get out your test light & check.

You may also want to look in the installation manual for the Avital unit & make sure the horn wire is (-). They may have changed it to (+) in the last year or so but I doubt it. If it is (+) then that would explain why you would need a relay - the ford system in the cab is a (-) system.
If you feel like making a run to SW New York I'll be more than happy to hook it up for you and show you how it's done, just let me know when.
