Whining noise

Hey everyone,

I've recently started experiencing a whining type noise when starting out in 1st gear that gets progressively louder as the revs build up and goes away once the revs drop. I can't notice the noise once moving at anything faster than about 5-10 mph. If I have it in park or neutral and give it some gas, I get the same noise.

It almost sounds like feedback coming through the radio, but that is not the problem. The noise occurs whether the radio is on or not. It also seems to have a strange buzzing type sound to the idle.

I've done some research on previous posts and the two that seem to come up most are the alternator and power steering pump. Would this noise be consistent with the alternator . . . specifically the link to RPM's? I also get a weird scraping type noise when it is cold out that I thought may have been a bearing on a pulley but perhaps this is related to the alternator as well?

Is there an easy way to check if this is the problem? The whining/buzzing has just recently started so I'm wondering if the alternator is going.

Thanks for the feedback!

Not real familliar with the newre Ford alternators but some of the other brands have made noise when a diod in the alt. goes bad. You can test that with a volt meter. The alt output will be in the 9 -10 volt area. If you have a grinding scraping noise you can check out the bearings with a big screwdriver or a stick. Place one end against the alt. near the bearing area and the other end to your ear. It should sound smooth. Just remember to be very careful. It is not a pretty sight if the stick slips into the fan.

Good luck

Rob Bromley,

Just for that reason, I broke down and paid the money for the auto stethospcope (sp ).

I think I got it either from Eastwood Company or Griots garage.

They are slightly uncomfortable to have pegged in your ear for a ling time, but work real nice.

Don't know if you saw ( have ) these or not, thought I'd pass it along to you, in case you were interested.

Does exactly the same thing as the pipe trick, so some might not consider it worth the money....?

You are telling me they are uncomfortable. They do come in handy though.

Thanks
