Door Lock - Surprize

Started my truck up the other morning and let it run foe about 15 minutes (tempurature outside was 5 egrees above 0). When I went to get in the truck I found the doors had locked. Not a problem as I used my spare to open the truck.

Has this ever happened to any of you? Is there a time period after which the doors lock automatically?

Thanks - Remo

I think your neighbor was messing with you...

Actually, no, I've never heard of this happening. Let us know if you find anything out...

Brain Lock-Up

RP,

The neighbor idea is a good one but the closet one is a 1/2 mile away. More than likely what happened was I accidently hit the lock button when I exited the vehicle. Typical aging engineer, the condition is advancing rapidly.

I just put this thread out there to see if there was "actually" an on-going door lock-up issue.

Thanks - Remo

YES!!

Here at my work we are required to leave the keys in the ignition. One day, soon after buying this truck, I go out to my truck and its locked! I had to have it slim-jimd.

After that happened I disabled the auto-lock feature and have had no problems since.

I don't see why you want electric door locks or windows on trucks anyways. Its super easy to reach over and roll windows up and down and lock doors. Just mechanisms that will break eventually and require repair.

Every car I've had with electric door locks has at some point had them break, and windows were far worse.

mscott goes manual

mscott,

I see where you are going to purchase a new 2003 Ford pickup. The way these vehicles come packaged almost all of them come throught with electric windows and locks. You may be one of the very few people who have to "special order" crank up windows.

I hope you don't want the 5.4L motor because they won't let you order a "manual" transmission.

Regards - Remo

We have a 95 Mustang Gt that does that. When you crank the car, the doors will automatically lock after a few seconds. It also does it even if the key is in the ignition and not turned on. With the auto-lock feature, if you put the key in the ignition, leave the doors open until you get in. If not, it will lock. It can be disabled, and after a few times of getting locked out, you will want to diable it. It is really a safety feature that is supposed to keep the doors from opening while driving.

This exact problem surfaced on a 1998 Mercury Villager I used to own. Every time you would shut the door after using the button to unlock the door it would lock itself. It would also lock itself when you tried to get out of the car. It would do this exactly 3 times. It literally would not let you out until you tried 3 times. This stumped Ford techs and they couldnt solve it. However I did. It turned out that the solenoid that physically unlocked the drivers side door was not fully actuating, it was only partially actuating. When you would shut the door or start pulling on the handle to open the door it was enough of a bumping to throw the solenoid closed again. I told them to replace the door lock solenoid and whala problem solved.
