Question "ESOF" not working.

Hi Guys

My son n law just called on cellp. He's out in boonies on a cattle ranch and no 4wd. Says when he pushes the "esof" he just gets flashing lights on dash...no 4WD?

I told him to get a cow..hitch up..that'll give you "4 leg drive" just kidding him...hes still got 2 wd.

Any thoughts on why the 4wd is not engaging when he pushes the dash button? Its a 96 explorer V6 a/t...not sure if its same/similiar systems as used on trucks? Its still a Ford.

TIA.....OT

Since it is a Ford my guess would be a loose or popped vacuum line off the shift motor assembly. Your son will have to get dirty under the truck, but if the hoses are in place he could also check to see if there is dirt/debris blocking the shift fork or plugging the vacuum lines. Past that there could be a blown fuse due to one of the above reasons, but I don't know where to start looking for that one.

I have a friend that had a similar problem with his Ranger. I haven't heard of any problems with tansfer case shifting problems the the '97+ full size trucks, only front differentails not locking in. Tell him to find the motor that shifts the transfer case (under the truck in the fullsize & behind the drivers seat? in the Rangers) and tap it a few times with a hammer. If the truck shift in to 4WD after this then he need to replace the motor.

I'm not gonna tell you the price of one of these for a Ranger...considering it's a glorified power window motor it shouldn't cost 4 times as much!
