Mike, Question about shift point??

Mike~

I have an '01 SCrew with the 5.4. I have had the Super Chip in for a while. After I installed it, I noticed that it shifted a lot harder. At first, I just thought that it was a firmer shift but the more I drove it and really accerated on it the more it felt really jerky. I also noticed that it felt like my differential was clanking or maybe my U-joints were a little worn. So I made an appointment at the dealership to check those (only have 27,000) so I took the chip out and it shifted much better and there didn't seem to be the clunkiness in the rear end. Dealership said they didn't notice the rear end acting strange (and I would have to agree) I had the chip in my last truck and it didn't shift near this harshly.

I am curious if there might be something wrong with my truck that the chip is highlighting or if the chip might have the a more harsh shift program than my last one.

Just curious if you have any ideas?

Could be any number of things, none of which can be determined here. Basically, no standard program Superchip makes a stock & healthy $r70W or 4R100 transmission shift "hard," even at full-throttle; it's a snappier shift by the time you get to WOT than stock to be sure, but is never "hard," the actual increase in shift pressure is extremely small. Nor does it normally shift noisily with the Superchip, usually when there's noise like that there's slop, and the slop is the actual problem.

Tech Support can't be done here, & there are far too many possibilities to type it all out here anyway, so you'll need to give us a call at our number below if you'd like to go over this.

Briefly, the SVB2 program is not new, it's common & has been around for years, so it's well known & doesn't have inherent tendency to cause that, just to give you an idea of what we see in general. We actually own an SVB2 ourselves and we have no such problems, though ours does certainly have some driveline slop when you check out backlash, U-joint play front & rear, etc., to the point that I'm actually surprised there isn't some obvious noise driving it. Of course, that particular truck of ours is a 2001 5.4 Lariat 4X4 ORP, and a 6000 lb. pig at that. Sounds like you have some driveline slop that the dealer is calling "within spec" but is actually very borderline, at best, and could perhaps be aggravated by the Superchip; however, the total increase in shift pressure in the Superchip, even at WOT (wide-open throttle) is actually very small, so you'd have to have a pretty fair amount of slop to start picking up a noise like that.

If you get a chance, give us a call & we can go over that in some detail with you, to see if maybe we can determine just what's up there, etc., ok?

Talk to you soon,
