chip for my 2000 expedition

I just sold my 99 SD v10 4x4 because we needed a suv for the baby. I bought a 2000 4.3 expedition with tow package 4x4. i have a 23ft WA that weights 6500 lbs and I need more power, I have not hooked up to it yet but I think I will still need more and the chip is the most logic way at this time. I am going to get a K&n tomarrow, what kind of chip should I get ???. I do not know the axle ratio..

Hi Evan,

Family additions do indeed have a way of making us change a lot of things, vehicles included! the Expedition is a great SUV, it should do a good job for you, and it's 4.6 could use some help towing that load.

The Superchip is the only chip that tunes each vehicle individually according to it's PCM revision, tunes the engine for maximum horsepower and torque at any throttle position or rpm, and that is also 50-state emissions certified (CARB approved), no other chipmaker offers all of that. There are a lot of people here using them for exactly what you're doing, towing a big load.

You'll pick up roughly a 10%-12% power gain from the Superchip, as well as it improving shift characteristics, removing delays & retards, etc., so the powertrain will be more responsive. The maximum potential power gain on the 4.6 engine is 26 HP & 40 lbs./ft. of torque, but in round numbers, think of it as a 10% power gainer, basically, as you'll have about 10% more power on tap all the time. You will have to use premium gas of course, minimum of 91 octane. We also have 2-program units, the Superchip Flip Chip, that we can set up in a dual octane configuration if you need to be able to use 87 octane sometimes, but the power gains on 87 octane will be small, of course. You can change programs by simply flipping it's toggle switch.

We also offer our newer Superchips Micro Tuner, which is a hand-held programmer you can use to tune the vehicle right thru the OBD-II port, so you don't have to remove the PCM & clean it's connector as is required with traditional performance chips. It also allows you to set your own 1-2, 2-3 & 3-4 upshift points at full throttle individually (like if you wanted a higher 2-3 than the 3-4 when accelerating hard or under hard load, etc.). You can also set your own levels of shift firmness for each shift individually as well.

The Micro Tuner will also allow you to correct the speedometer for changes to tire size or gear ratios, and it also includes a built-in OBD-II code scanner, too. It stores your factory program so you can go back to stock at any time, like if you only wanted the additional power & use premium gas when towing, for example.

So there are 3 different Superchips products that will work well for you, ranging from the single program Superchip to the 2-program Superchip Flip Chip (like if you wanted the dual octane capability as described above) and last, what most people are going with now due to it's ease of installaiton & many features, the Superchips Micro Tuner.

The Superchips tuning will work fine with things like an intake kit and a cat-back exhaust system, underdrive pulleys & electric fans, all of which will help that Expedition cope with that large towing load. And if you decide to do more involved modifications, we can also do any custom tuning that may be required.

We also offer combo deals on chips & intakes, or chips intake & exhaust, etc., for those who are doing more than 1 modification at a time. For example, if you haven't picked up your intake kit yet, the Air Force One intake would actually get you more power gain than the K&N FIPK kit. However, if you already have your K&N unit on the way, don't change it as it will be fine. If you are doing a drop-in K&N air filter in the factory airbox, that will get you a 3-4 HP gain on the 4.6 motor. Virtually anything you to do reduce restriction in the air intake tract will net you more power, so it's hard to go wrong.

If you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, discuss your needs, what other modifications you may be considering, etc., please feel free to give us a call, we'll be happy to help & go over all your options on the Superchips tuning, etc. so you get the best product for your needs.

Good luck with your Expedition, and more importantly, the new addition to your family!
