tuning with Diablo chip
I recently purchased a silver 2001 L with 25k miles on it, and it already had an Airaid intake and Flowmaster muffler installed. I ordered a Diablo chip directly from their website for the truck. my question is this: would the chip have to be reburned if i were to get headers and/or a lower boost pulley? i plan on getting these mods as $$ allows, also how much should i expect to gain with JBA Cat4Ward headers? are they worth it? any advice greatly appreciated...the L is a BADA$$ truck, I love it!!!
Hi TZTLightning01,
Welcome to F-150 Online!
Yes, you will have to have any performance chip reprogrammed for those kind of modifications, anytime you raise boost in the Lightning, you need custom tuning to fix the Air/Fuel ratios, timing curves, etc.
If you intend to do boost changes, there are also other modifications that you should do to support that, including proper ventilation of the increased crankcase pressure, and that also needs to be specifically tuned for. You should also upgrade to a Goodyear Gatorback belt for the blower to pick up maximum boost by reducing the amount of belt slippage.
We carry all the parts to do all of that, we're F-150 platform specialists so we've modified & provided the tuning for many Lightnings, our Lightning owners have won everything from the WFC (World Ford Challenge) to the Silver State Classic, etc. If you'd like to give us a call, we can help you will all of that, and we can also take the performance of your Lightning just as far as you want to go.
In the programs that we use in the Superchip for the Lightning, no, you do not have to have tuning changes for those shorty headers, though you do in the non-Lightning F-150's. In the Diablo chip you might need custom tuning for the headers, it just depends on where the A/F ratios end up.
In terms of how much power you can expect to gain from the JBA headers (which we also carry), figure anywhere from 15 to as much as maybe 20 hp. You'll gain more power from headers as your power level from other modifications goes up, I.E., you gain more from headers at the 450 hp level than you do when you're at the 400 hp level, and so on. If you want to really gain maximum power from headers, we can supply you with custom full length long-tube headers for your Lightning (or any other 5.4 F-150) and you'll gain even more power, upwards of 40 horsepower with high-flo cats if you have a lower pully to up the boost. That's the setup I run on our 2001 Lightning making well over 500 hp.
The best thing to do at this point would be to give us a call when you get a chance, so we can go over all of this with you in detail, give you a good overview of what mods to do when, which modification is going to be best from a bang for the buck standpoint, etc., so you can get your performance to whatever level you want it with the least expense, and without making any mistakes, etc. Our contact info is just below if you'd like to give us a call.
Congratulations on your Lightning!
