425 hp vs 333 hp

My brother owns a 01 BMW M3 W/333HP. last night he smoked a Honda Prelude type SH with 425hp. The prelude had a supercharger and NOS.he said hnda got him off the line but by the time he was in 3rd gear the honda was left behind. Is it about gearing that you could do that. Thanks

Something doesn't sound right there Kevin, as 425 hp in that Prelude provides a significantly better power-to-weight ratio than 333 hp in that Bimmer M3.

Sounds to me like that Prelude wasn't actually making anything like 425 horsepower and someone's just got some wishful thinking going on there, or a really big mistake was made while driving, like the nitrous not being armed or the bottle running out.

Unless the Honda was so tightly geared that he literally ran out of rpms in *top* gear (something I very strongly doubt as he'd need something alone the lines of at least 6.17 or better gears to run out of rpms with the Bimmer in 3rd), a difference in gearing just is not going to cause that kind of outcome at those actual power levels in those vehicles.

I call shenannigans on the 425 hp.

The kid said he had cold air forced induction, Greddy supercharger and nos. The way my brother told me was he thought the preludes gearing was to short. The M3 has a short 1st gear but after second and third the prelude was lost. The M3 is a very fast car!!. He asked if any one else wanted to go for $100 a race and they all bailed. So the kid could have been lying

425 hp!! lol

Well doing a few little pwr to weight calcs we have:

honda 5.4 pwr/wt
Now thats amazing!!! A dodge viper only has a pwr/wt of 6.4!!

bmw m3 10.2 pwr/wt

Sounds like a case of someone bolting on a few goodies and adding up all the ridiculus hp #'s off the boxes!

intake 15hp
exhaust 15hp
headers 20hp
supercharger 150hp
and so on and so on...............

Point of Fact

I personally witness 1988 Mustang with just over 400 HP (415 - 435 if I had to guess), absolutely dominate a M3. Not even close. For that matter, that 88 probably weighs a lot more than a Prelude. I call b.s. on the 425 hp. I know what the Stang was running, and it is completely reliable, no nitrous oxide, naturally aspirated horse power. Just a 302 with a 347 stroker kit, some good heads and intake etc. and a lot of "go" pedal. The Stang even broke traction pretty hard going into second gear. All in all, it was a complete whoopin. Exactly what you would expect for about 100 hp difference in similar weight cars.

Tennagers now, who knows what they have in there rice rockets. Its a big game to get as much hp as possable. Now the prelude got him off the line then it was over. The M3 will go 0-60 in 4.8-5.2
there are not many factory cars that will do that. I would say the mustang, camaro, corvette will run. He raced a WS6 firebird Friday and ir gave the M3 a run. So I don't know, until I know what is under a hood of a import then I would race. I have seen plenty of magazines and " Fast and the Furious to not know what they have. Its not hard to put turbos etc. on a car now.

It depends on the year of the M3. The new ones will annihilate a lot of cars. But the 99 and prior cars aren't too fast. I raced a 99 M3 with a stick in a bone stock 99 mustang gt vert and beat the guy by half a car. He had a person in his car...but still. 425 hp is definitely BS in the prelude. 425 HP would send a prelude into the 10's probably.

The M3 my brother has is 2001 w/ 333hp 0-60 in 4.8. The old ones had 240hp. I just don't see getting 425 out of a 2.0 honda engine. It may be possible but that engine wont last long!

Do me a favor. Tell the kid with the Honda that I was just kidding about the stickers adding horsepower!

Simply wishful thinking from the Honda owner.

Greddy supercharger
I'm not positive here, but I thought Greddy mostly dealt with turbo systems for the import cars. The only S/C kit made for preludes that I am aware of is the Jackson Racing one. There is a kid in the PA area that has one and it's heavily modded and he's only pushing around 250hp to the wheels.

Is it about gearing that you could do that.
Gearing plays a huge part in how quick or fast a car is or can be. And alot of people underestimate gearing. You could have a 425hp car get dusted by a 333 hp car because of gearing, it is possible.

Must have been the "Electric Turbo Supercharger" that they are selling on eBay.

Rice your race....Race your rice....Riceroni. 425 hp in a Honda? HAA!! No way. I can't imagine that it's even possible for any VTech engine to even come close to producing that kind of HP. Well, wait....53 stickers X 3Hp a sticker + 19 Hp for the giant wing = Burnt rice.

Well, let's not get carried away, though here we all prefer our trucks, there are some very nice imports available, and there are some import owners building nice machines. In fact, the size of the import performance market is far larger than the performance market for these trucks, etc.

I think it's the imports with few modifications other than a "coffee can" exhaust & driven like race cars by their owners that really gets under the skin, not the imports owned by those who do know what's what and are doing effective modifications & making them run darned quick.

I think it's only fair to show respect to those who do put the effort into their machine, whatever it may be, an F-150, a Harley motorcycle, etc., fine machinery is fine machinery, and that's what most of us respect & yearn for.

Live & let live................. (as long as you're faster?)
