what chip is best

I own a 2000 f-150 V8 5.4L. I have been reading a lot about different kinds of chips. i bought a venom 400 control module that gave me better throttle response and more power but now i get horrible gas mileage. i was looking at the kenne bell dual calibration switch chip or the superchip micro tuner. which one do you think will help my gas mileage but give me a good amount of extra horsepower

I think the Superchip rather than the Tuner will give you better power reslults(not sure though). I don't know anything about the Kenne Bell, but I sure am happy with my superchip. The chip isn't designed to give you better gas mileage...it just something that MAY happen with the improved tuning. I think I noticed a little better mpg, but not much...I tend to be a little heavier on the pedal these days.

Go with the Superchip. I love mine. The shifts are great, the power is there, and I actually get about 2-3 mpg better and I am driving it harder now. Go figure. To show how the power is there, rather than beating my friend by 2 truck lengths in the 1/4, now it is about 6, maybe a little more. Its really that good.

Hi Beedon,

The Venom is OK for what it does, but what it does not do is actually reprogram the PCM with a properly R&D'd powertrain program. You can do much better than that unit.

The best thing to do is to use the Superchip tuning, whether you do it in the Micro Tuner, which is what I would recommend, or doing it in the traditional Superchip module that installs on the back of the PCM.

I definitely would not use anyone else's tuning, not Kenne Bell's or anyone else, as nobody else has anywhere near the sheer R&D into the F-150 platform compared to Superchips, there's literally just no comparison to the amount of experience Superchips has with this platform.

The best thing to do would be to ditch the Venom unit altogether and install the Micro Tuner. The Venom is not going to be able to make any more power on top of what the Superchip does, as you cannot use any more timing anywhere. The Superchip already optimizes timing fueling & everything else at *any* throttle position or rpm, and the Venom unit is really meant to be used either alone, or only with chips like Hypertech, Jet, etc., that only tune during open loop (full throttle, basically). With the Superchip, you don't need nor will you benefit from the Venom unit, the Superchip will take care of all of that.

What we suggest is to give us a call if you can spare a few minutes, and we'll go over all of this with you in detail so you can give it some thought in making your decision. Our contact info is below if you'd like to take advantage of that.
