Chip messing up shift kit?

hey mike,

just put in a transgo shift kit but it is exactly behaving like it should. i am thinking perhaps the the program on my chip (programmed to make it shift very hard) is conflicting with the shift kit....do i need to get the shift firmness erased off the chip?

heres what its doing.....a shift kit is supposed to make one sudden and hard shift into the next gear...every one i have ever ridden in did that, including my friends truck who helped me put it in (97 F150 with superchip)

my truck feels like it is doing 2 shifts at the same time or something, its not one sudden shift, more like 2 immediately after each other and thus, it wont scratch the tires on 1-2.....

i'm wondering if this isnt safe, what i need to do about the chip, and i WANT it to bark them, really bad......

Transgo

I'm noticing some less than positive comments about Transgo, or people who have them in their trannys. It maybe nothing, just making an observation.

I have a Superchip with a B&M shift kit (all installed by me, kit is set up on strip setting) They seem to work fine together. Mine barks 1-2 most every time.

Good luck,
Toby

Hi Bullitt,

We'll need to go over this via telephone so I can go over a number of things with you, there are any number of reasons why this might be happening.

In general, the Transgo is an excellent shift kit, about as good as you'll find for the Ford 4R70W transmission. It not only provides more fluid volume to the Overdrive band as they need, but it also has an overpressure relief provision as well, so you don't snap an intermediate shaft, etc.

The Transgo shift kit generally does not cause any problems when used in conjunction with the Superchip, and we virtually always use Transgo in these 4R70W's, it's a great kit. If you have the Transgo installed at a high level, then you can certainly get some uncomfortably hard shift characteristics, in which case we'll have do back it down with some custom programming in the Superchip. We generally recommend installing the Transgo kit at Level 1 when used with the Superchip in the 4R70W automatic like you have there. That configuration is well known and does not cause any problems, and if you want it to shift even harder, you can always go back in and take the Transgo kit up to the next level, but if you go too far to begin with, then we've got to do some custom programming to tame those shifts.

The bottom line is that you'll need to give us a call so we can go over this in detail to see if we can determine what is actualy happening in your case, and what's needed to take care of that, so give us a shout when you can, our contact info is below.

Talk to you soon!

The shift kit should only be one smooth and quick shift. There are a lot of springs to replace and holes to be drilled. If one thing is just a hair off you will feel it. Is it shifting like that in every gear? Because if it is from first to second the acclumator could be upside down (I know it sounds stupid but it is easy to do) That will not allow the pressure to be as great as intended therefore the shift will seem a bit sloppy. Good luck if you have the extra 20 bucks open it up agian and take it all the way apart and look over it again. Then fill it back up with B&M Trick Shift (great stuff). You should pull the chip and if it still does it you know it is not the chip
Hope that will give you some ideas

not gonna drop the VB

well after riding around in it for 3 days i'm convinced its ok....thats just the way it shifts, its not quick and sudden but its hard....it shifts the same in all gears, it wasnt the chip because i took it out and it did the same as with it in........

the 1-2 accumulator was a bit tricky because there were about 3 different ways to do it, but i'm pretty sure we got it back in right......

thanks for the help supertruck

No Problem. If the truck rides how you like it that is all that matters. Just keep an eye on it becuase you dont want to slowly damage your trany. Another think for you to look at is powerslot(limited slip for the rear) Just one more think i thought of did you torque the bolts to spec. Other than that safe speedin!
