New guy question about Superchip install and check engine light.
Sorry if this subject has been beaten up in the past but couldn't find anything and there's just too much stuff in here to dig through sometimes... Here goes...With the chip, does all the sensors and stuff on the engine still work like it should? In other words would you get a check engine light if something went legitimately (like a TPS sensor or EGR valve or something) bad and needed replacing? Which leads me to my next question....I was under the impression that the way the chip installed, if you removed it for service, you would not be able to tell there was ever a chip there. Is that true? I get the impression for the sake of argument you definately want to remove your chip before you go in for any kind of service, wether it's computer related or not. That way you avoid the headache of getting hit up with some BS about having a chip in because they wont know you have one anyways. Please correct me where I'm wrong. Thanks.
Hi Galaxy,
With the Superchip installed (as with most performance chips), you will still have full function of your vehicle's MIL (malfunction indicator light) systems, so if there is a problem, YES, you'll still get the warning of the Check Engine light. We do not do anything to defeat that or any other diagnostic or emission systems, we do not alter incoming sensor data, etc. What we do is simply tune the vehicle for use with better quality fuel & clean up the shifting in the automatics, basically.
When you remove the Superchip and clear the ECU properly afterwards, there is generally no tell-tale to indicate it's presence, as you are back to the factory program, and you have cleared the ECU by draining all residual current.
Yes, we do recommend removing any performance chip prior to service whether you are under warranty or not, just in case any diagnostics or troubleshooting needs to be done, it's always a good idea to have the ECU in stock trim. Otherwise, you may cause the mechanic to have to spend unnecessary time chasing down things that aren't actually problems & make his or her job harder, the last thing you want to do to a mechanic or any service department. If it's an oil change, I wouldn't bother, but anything else, it's a good idea to pull it.
Have fun!
