Angry ? about chip

i put my superchip in about 3 weeks ago and i like everything about it but there is a few quarks about it. Sometimes when i'm cruising through my development around 20 mph the rpm's will suddenly go up to around 2000 and shift back down even though i didn't give it gas. Also, when i'm at a stop and then punch it the rpm's will gradually go up and when i let off the throttle and punch it again it will then do what its supposed to and go wide open to put me in my seat. I don't know if this is norm. of not but some answers would be nice. thx

Hi Rob01F150,

No, that is not normal for it to downshift and the rpms to go up unless either you're either going up a grade (or driveway) and load increases as a result of course, or if you give it more throttle.

This could be a problem related to installation, such as if the connector is not properly cleaned and the ECU (that's your powertrain computer) cannot communicate with the Superchip properly in some situations, as that can cause those types of symptoms as well as others.

On the other hand, this just might be normal, I'd really have to know more details about exactly what the circumstances are when this happens, so to do that you'll need to call us so we can ask you some very specific questions and examine this thoroughly together.

The most basic answer is always to call whoever you purchased your Superchip from and get proper Tech Support on this or anything else related to the Superchip. If you purchased your Superchip new from us here at Performance Products, then this is covered right there in our Performance Products documentation, go right to the section that tells you about troubleshooting & how to get Technical Support, and of course give us a call as well.

If you purchased your Superchip elsewhere (and we have no idea if you are our customer or not due to the use of screen names here), then you can simply contact whoever you purchased it from for proper assistance.

It sounds like this could be a simple problem of not removing all the conformal coating from that connector and/or the Superchip coming loose because it wasn't taped in place (we do that in all pickup trucks, SUV's & 4wd's). To clean that connector properly, you need to remove the ECU from the vehicle and then remove both the top and bottom covers of the ECU so you can get access to both sides of the connector to clean it thoroughly. Once that is properly cleaned (and you'll also need to check the slot on the Superchip for any coating that has transferred over), then reseat the Superchip and tape it in place so that it cannot come loose over time from railroad tracks, speed bumps, etc. That is a precaution we take anytime we install them in P/U's, SUV's & 4wd's.

If you get in a bind and just don't have anywhere to turn for help, such as if you bought the Superchip used perhaps, etc., or for whatever reason, you can always call us & we'll try to assist you with your problem, or help you to determine if what you are experiencing is actually normal. Our contact info is just below for your convenience, so don't hesitate to call us, ok?

Good luck!
