Mike?

Hey Mike,

Everyone says you're the go to man on chips and performance. I have a couple uprades on my truck and was wanting to get the maximum performance out of my superchip and just overall. I was wondering if you new anything about the pulleysystems they have out for the 4.2L V6, and if it's worth the money? Also, I was wondering about headers for my truck, many people say there's no difference between the stock and after market, is this true?
I was just wanting to have a truck with great performance, and was just wondering if you could help me out!
If so please respond and if you have any info for me that can't be discussed online, I'll be glad to give you a call.
Oh one more question which aftermarket mufflers do you recommend and why? Flowmaster or MagnaFlow

Thanks,
Jay

Hi Jay!

With regard to the underdrive pulley for the 4.2 V-6, it is currently available only for the 1997 & 1998 model year. A change was made in the 1999 model year that requires changing the harmonic balancer as well. However, we are currently having underdrive pulleys for the 1999 & up 4.2 V-6 F-150 manufactured, and they will be available in about a month, according to our manufacturer.

Yes, they are worthwhile, as you get a 10 hp peak gain (a tad over 8 hp gain to the rear wheels), but it's also the type of modification that works *all* the time, increasing horsepower and torque available at any throttle position, at any rpm, under any conditions, which is why underdrive pulleys are so popular. In the case of the 4.2 V-6, it's just the crank pulley that is changed.

With regard to headers, I don't agree with the statement that they don't help over the stock exhaust manifolds; sounds like someone has some bad iinformation there, so I'm glad you asked. They are very much worthwhile on any F-150, including the 4.2 V-6 motor. The 4.2 V-6 picks up about 14-15 more horsepower from the JBA headers, and that is for a stock 4.2 V-6. For one making more power, the gains from the headers are higher; for example, on the extreme side, with a supercharger installed, the gains can be an easy 30 horsepower!

So yes, both the underdrive pulleys and the headers are worth doing for anyone looking to maximize the performance of their engine.

By all means, please feel free to give us a call, we're always happy to spend some time with you going over everything you've done to your vehicle, where you want your performance to be at, and how to get there from where you're at now, etc.
