Hypertech

Has anyone used the Hypertech ECU Power Programmer III?
Give me a thumbs up or down. My ride is a '98 XLT SCAB 4X4 4.6 5-speed. Any and all reviews would be appreciated

Thanks!

Hi hoopha,

The Hypertech unit looks neat, and will give small power gains. It is a generic program however, meaning Hypertech makes only 1 program for all 1998 4.6 automatics, for example. Hypertech also only changes the engine tuning to add power where there are no emissions standards to be met during open-loop operation, which is only at extremely heavy to wide-open throttle. The rest of the time there is no power gain. They only tune where there are no emissions standards that have to be met, because it's much cheaper, but that also puts a big compromise on the results.

What most people are more concerned with are the actual results of the new powertrain programming, the actual power gains and performance iimprovements made, and in those areas, which is what you're doing a modification for in the first place, you can do much better than the Hypertech.

By all means, take some time and read the threads in this section, and see what people have to say about what they're using. You'll find most using the Superchip, because it delivers better results; larger power gains and a noticeably better performance enhancement than you get with Hypertech, as the Superchip is made for *your* individual vehicle, and gives you more power *all* the time at any throttle position, not just when you're running at full-throttle. Those are very important differences.

Will you be happy if you get the Hypertech? Sure, you could be, certainly there are some happy Hypertech owners out there.

Among those who have actually used both the Superchip and the Hypertech on the same vehicle here on F-150 Online, they have always preferred the Superchip tuning, hands down.

If you'd like to go over this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call, we'll be happy to go over the facts with you, so you can give it some thought before making your decision.

Best of luck whatever you decide & we hope you'll hang out here with us on F-150 Online in your spare time!
