Will a Superchip work?

I have a 2000 F150 5.4 and I'm changing the gears to 4.56. I also changed the tires to 265/75/16 so I will now have a very different gear ratio and a slightly different tire size.

Would a standard superchip be my best course of action to make everything (like the speedometer and transmission) work correctly?

Thanks,

Tim

Hi Tim,

I'm glad you asked, as the answer is no. The Superchip has no way of automatically knowing just what you have done to your vehicle.

You will need a custom program to correct your speedometer, odometer and the shift points in the automatic transmission, and that can easily be done. Just give us a call at our number listed below and we can take care of that for you, no problem. You'll get the power gain & all other benefits from the Superchip, and we'll fix the speedometer, odometer & shift points too.

That is some pretty steep gearing to put in, that will be great for drag racing or for towing!

Just give us a shout when you get a chance & we'll be happy to go over this with you in detail.

Question

Hey Mike- At what point do you recomend a custom chip? For example... Air Intake, after-cat, I'm know you don't. But what if you go to Headers? If this is not proper for this Forum I understand. HHG

Hi Harry,

Actually, this is the perfect forum for that kind of discussion!

The anser is, first, it will depend on what kind of vehicle; here, we're basically talking about the 1997 & newer F-150's & other Ford trucks & SUV models. In these vechles being discussed here, thigns like a K&N or S&B air filter, an airbox elimination kit (like the Air Force One, etc.), and cat-back exhausts do not affect teh tuning enough to require custom programming.

Custom programming is generally needed for things like changing the MAF (mass airflow meter), superchargers, nitrous oxide, ported heads, gear ratio and/or tire size changes in 1999 & newer models, etc.

The issue of using headers is one that we do recomend having a custom program done, as you'll always make the most power from the headers if we do that, as headers will make the engine run leaner. Now whether that actually *must* be done or not really depends on wheer the A/F ratios actually land. In about 10%-15% of these vechiles, installing headers will make it go lean enough to cause a bit of detonaiton, and if that happens, then sure, a custom program is required to correct that. So I guess the best answer is, we always recommend custom programming for headers, though it is not always *required*, it's always beneficial.

If you need to have anything like that done, or would just like to go over that in more detail, please feel free to give us a call.

Good luck!
