Mike a quick Question

I installed my flip chip and air force 1 intake today. I notice a big difference in the performance of my truck as compared to factory set up. The question i have is that, when i take off from a dead stop, or get on the pedal hard the first shift i always hear a whistle and a suction noise. I want to know if this is normal or is my transmission slipping. With factory set up i have never heard or felt this noise. I have a 2002 supercrew with a 5.4L and and 3.55 rear end. Please let me know something soon. Also when im not driving hard or hot rodding the shift is fine, no noise or anything.

im no performance expert, but when i installed my k&n intake, i here a suction noise, like a vaccum, and all it is, is the engine finally being able to breath. Its just your intake. If your not feeling anything physcial, then my money is on the new filter.

Hi jgslider,

First, relax, you're ok.

If you are using a throttle body spacer, that will cause a "whistle" in the intake when used together with any airbox elimination kit. So if it's a whistle you're heaing, pull that throttle body spacer and it will go away.

"Intake moan" is something you will hear with virtually any intake kit when you get into the throttle heavy, and as another poster mentioned, that is simply the sound of more air entering the engine much easier, with less restriction. You'll notice that you don't hear that when cruising, you only hear that when you get into the throttle heavy, and that is perfectly normal, that is *supposed* to happen. It sounds kinda like an older engine with a 4-bbl. carb when you romp down on it and the secondaries open up, you get that same rush of incoming air, very nice!

You have *less* slippage now in your transmission thanks to the Superchip, the tranny shifts quicker and firmer, which reduces slippage and causes less heat to be generated, allowing the bands & clutches to last longer.

One other thing you may notice, during a full-throttle 1-2 upshift you may get a little bit of belt slippage, which will cause a short noise to be heard just for a fraction of a second during a full-throttle 1-2 upshift, and that is simply a bit of belt slippage that happens from the much quicker upshift. That is easily cured with a good belt, we recommend using a Goodyear "Gatorback" belt, and you'll never hear that again, if you happen to be getting that sound. It's not a must to change your belt, this is just a good permenent cure if you happen to get that sound. The original factory serpentine belt is not very good quality in terms of how much effective "traction" it has on the pullies, though it will certainly last a long time, and does OK in bone-stock trim with the very sloppy & soft shifitng, it doesn't "grab" very well.

If you would like to go over any of this in more detail, please feel free to call us.

Enjoy your Easter weekend,
