A couple of questions
A couple of questions
Hi all
I have read a good chunk of the messages in this forum and I have a couple of questions,
1, My 2002 F150 (4.2 v6) is a working truck (construction) will the performance with the superchip really be noticeable to me.
2, Will the performance of the chip and the cost of the higher octane gas outweigh the savings of the cheaper gas.
I frequently haul materials and sometimes tow a readymix cement container.
As I said, I have read the forum and it seems that everyone here is more concerned about the speed aspect and I was more concerned with the day to day work related uses of the superchip.
TIA

1) the difference will be noticeable to you. not a little either...you will notice it for sure.
2) about it helping gas mileage and evening out with the higher gas prices i can not really say. because with the extra power I know i am driving my truck harder...but maybe if i drove them the same with and without the chip it would even out.

I have considered a chip for the E250 I drive for work. It has the 5.4, so the power is adequate. I would like better shifting. I don't think I can justify the added cost of higher octane fuel. This van gets 11mpg. I would need to see a substantial gain. What I think I might do is get a flip chip so I can have the better shifts and the option of 87 or 93 octane.
It's real hard to tell you what you will think. For the money you spend, I think it's worth the added assurence that your truck will be able to perform the task at hand. It may also help to prolong the service life of your drivetrain.
It wount cost you a fortune, so I say give it a try.
Good luck!

Hi Tonyeo,
Welcome to F-150 Online!
To give you an idea of what you can realistically expect from the Superchip, in round numbers, it's basically a 10% power gainer. The maximum potential gain from the Superchip for the 4.2 V-6 is 25 HP & 31 lbs./ft. of torque. The vehicle will simply feel like you have about 10%-12% more motor under the hood, is a good way to put it. It will also clean up the shift characteristics if it has an automatic transmission, and remove the top speed limiter.
Also, the 4.2 V-6 in the F-150 has a particular characteristic, even though it has a decent HP output stock, 205 or so, it's is noticeably weak below 2500 rpm, and you'll notice that is improved with the Superchip as well. That is something the V-6 F-150 owners in particular appreciate about the Superchip
The actual costs to use the Superchip on premium gas all the time versus running on the factory program on 87 octane gas is pretty low, surprisingly so to many people. It averages out at about $100 per 10,000 miles driven, that means about $150-$200 a year more for fuel, and many pay even less. So for most people, it's not more than just a couple of bucks a week more at the gas pump.
As far as having a Superchip on a vehicle that is used day in and day out for work, for towing, or for anything else, there are no limitations in that regard, all you have to do is use the right fuel with the Superchip and you can do anything you want with that vehicle. There are no detrimental affects from using the Superchip, and the basic "character" of the vehicle will not change. It will simply be a more responsive & powerful F-150, and thus much more enjoyable to drive.
The people here who use the Superchip are using them on their daily drivers, just like we are here at Performance. Most F-150 owners are putting their vehicles to work in some manner, whether it's towing loads, hauling equipment, materials, tools, people, or even drag racing, you name it & people do it with the Superchip in their trucks.
If you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call.
We hope you'll hang out with us here at F-150 Online in your spare time!

Hey Tonyeo,
My truck is also a daily driven work truck. I also had the same questions you have. Now all I can say is WOW. After a month of having it in, I still can't get over the improvements. And it's not just power, either. The engine just runs sooo much smoother and quieter. It feels like the whole operation of the vehicle has dramatically improved. I have experienced NO troubles with the chip in. The mileage has stayed about the same, but only because I can't resist putting my foot into it all the time.
I'm sure that if I could eventually calm down, there would definately be a mpg gain. But that's no fun
Bottom line, if you are even considering a chip, just do it. You won't regret it. And to top it all off, the best customer support anyone could ask for is right there for you, Mike Troyer.
Hope you chip it, and make sure to post your pleasureable findings when you do. Good luck
