Pinging when WOT w/Superchip
Pinging when WOT w/Superchip
Mike T or anyone else,
I just installed a new Superchip in my 2000 Lightning and WOW! what a difference. I do have one concern though. After following all the directions including turning on the headlights with the battery disconnected my L runs great except when WOT. I get a bit of pinging when I do that. Is that something that takes the chip a bit to clear up on its own? Should I wait until I have more miles on it before I jump on it? Or is it crummy winter gas? I run strictly Chevron Supreme. When I put the motor under load but not WOT it does not ping. I'm hoping it's just the computer learning my engine but what do you guys think? Do I need a reburn?
Thanks in advance and BTW special thanks to Mike Troyer. Very helpful and knowledgeable person. I enjoyed our conversation immensly.

Hi Redshift!
Hmmm, that's extremely rare. We should talk about that together over the phone, and I know you called today (you're DW, right?) and I was not personally available at that particular moment. Please forgive me, as today was the last day of the "old" pricing for custom programming, so we've been swamped with people geting their custom program orders in before that deadline, as you might imagine. It's even kept me off F-150 Online for the past 2 days! Usually I'll interrupt anything to take that kind of call, today was just a very unusually hectic day due to the deadline, my apologies.
In general, since you only have a very few miles on it after installing the Superchip, yes, this could very easily go away very soon as the ECU adapts a bit to it's new program, however, this is not what normally happens, so I'd prefer to speak with you about this in detail to examine this properly before making any assumptions.
Usually Chevron is a great fuel out in the western coastal states, in all of California it's usually about the best pump premium you can get, though there can always be exceptions in a certain geographic area.
Usually if it were a matter of too much timing or poor fuel quality, you'd get detonation just about anytime you were under load, but you're not, it's happening only @ WOT as you mention. That could be an A/F issue perhaps, though that would have to be caused by something else in addition to the Superchip, as the A/F's are nice and fat in those programs, so we'll want to go over any other changes of any kind to the vehicle that could potentially affect this, among other things.
We're closed weekends, but for this kind of thing we want to speak with you before Monday of course, so I will give you a call on Saturday. For right now, stay off WOT until we can speak and go over this in detail, ok? That'll keep you safe until we can determine why this is happening.
This could be just a fuel quality issue if you live close to Tom in Tacoma, he got a Superchip and had a problem with pinging, and it was simply fuel quality in his case, so we took care of that for him very easily. If you're close to Tom, that could be the issue. We'll cover all of that when we speak on the phone!
