chip install

In anticipation of ordering a Superchip on Wednesday I attempted a dry run. I have 2 problems

1. After unscrewing the bolt on the wire harness as far as it would go, the harness would not come off as shown in the tech section. It says that the harness becomes detached from the computer when the bolt is loosened

2. My computer has a metal cover wher the chip installs not plastic.

Can anyone help??

Once the bolt on the harness is loose, you still have to wiggle the connector to get it off the computer. It's no big deal and it should come right off.

As far as the metal cover goes, if I remember correctly, mine had a little plastic cover that popped right off.

I'm sure if you call Mike Troyer he can tell you what exactly you need to do. He's a wealth of info on this board.

Hope this helps,
Bob

Hi va150,

We suggest that you do *not* attempt a "dry run", as you do not have our installation instructions and can easily run into a problem you won't be sure what to do about. SOme online "instructions" are helpful, but don';t deal with all the cvarious details as thoroughly as we do in our Performance Products documentation that we send out with each Superchip we ship, in addition to the manufacturers instructions.

What rtroha said is correct, as you loosen that 10mm bolt the wiring harness will slowly back off, and then once it's loose enough, you just wiffle it off. You must be very careul not to bend any of the 104 piuns on the front of the ECU once that harness is detached, and in fact, I would suggest that you do *not* attempt to do this before you receive our installation instructions that will come with the Superchip when ordered from us.

There are a few ECU's that will have a metal plate instead of the black plastic pop-out tab, but they are rare in the F-150, and there are a couple of different styles, so that is not possible to go over here, again, you need our installation instructions, which come with the Superchip.

Do yourself a favor, button everything back up and just leave it until you get the Superchip and our instructions, ok? Feel free to give us a call to go over this with you, we're happy to do that, we will reopen from the New Year's holiday on Wednesday, the 2nd at 10am. I will be out that afternoon, so unless you can call me before about 11:30 am, you'll need to reach me on Thursday so I cna go over in detail just what you will find and how to deal with it, etc.

Hang in there, it won't take long.

My 97 had the metal cover and the computer contacts were just covered with white grease real easy to clean and install. On my wifes 99 it had the plastic cover with the goog on the computer contacts much more difficult to clean. Like Mike said above just wiggle the connector very easily and it should slide right off. But you need your chip first!!

thanks for the help. I did not remove the ECU just took a good look at it to see if it would be easy. I did loosen the 10mm bolt on the wire harness but re tightened it, everything still works.

I am going to wait untill i get the chip before i do anything else, i just wanted to see if everything was easy to get to.

Talk to you Wed morning Mike!
