Keep at it. My truck ran a 17.2 as it's best time the first night out, but as you can see, it has come a long ways

Hi TRUSSMAN,

I can tell you something that should make you feel better. One of our 2001 F-150's here at Performance, a 5.4 mind you, ran an 18.40 @ 80 mph in bone-stock trim, a second slower than what you ran! It's a Supercab 4X4 Lariat ORP, and weighs over 5500 lbs. so we really couldn't complain, but it sure was slow......

Don't worry about it, you are going to be able to improve that significantly, and it won't break the bank.

As your budget allows, we'd suggest starting off with the top 3 best bang-for-the-buck mods; optimizing your powertrain programming with the Superchip, reduce the restriction in the air intake tract with the Air Force One, and you already have something done to the exhaust. I don't know if that is a complete cat-back system or just a muffler change, if it's a cat-back systrem, stick with what you have. If it's a muffler change, as #3 think about doing a proper cat-back system to get the full benefit of flow engineering & maximum power gain, like the Magnaflow unit. You can gain considerably more power with a cat-back system compared to a muffler change.

These things can be done in any order you like, we just suggest going the bang-for-the-buck route.

There are plenty of bolt-ons you can do to improve the performance of your vehicle as your budget allows. Enjoy your vehicle, you've got a great truck and performance is easy to improve over time as funds permit!

Hi M. O. P. no offence taken I know you wish you had the extra room of an supercab!! good thing about this site we can all have fun. Mike what is the weight of an supercab cab 2 wheel drive any ideas? with the lid I'm thinking about 4700 lbs. is that close? you are right about the exhaust I just did the muffler did not want to lose any low end by opening things up to much being I have so little gear 3.08's. Again thanks everyone for the comments

Hi Trussman,

4.6 automatic with 3.08's, yep, that's pretty tall! Torque is the key for all of these F-150's, and a 4.6 with tall gearing even more so.

Weight-wise I think you're close too, Neal's 5.4 2WD in it's lightest trim is about 4400 lbs. if memory serves, so in your configuration & with that lid, 4700 is probably fairly close in a 2WD model. That's a lot lighter than our 5500+ lb. porker.

Cool

HI!... Well guys "THE FREAK" went to the dragstrip this SATURDAY. It was at SPARTA DRAGWAY. This was the last day of racing before they close for WINTER. Temp was about 43-48 degree's, 5kph wind down the track (FOR ONCE LOL) and it was cloudy with the occasional spitting rain and can you beleive it?, SNOW!!!!!!! The track sucked! They would'nt spray down any VHT because it was the last day out. The 1ST couple runs, I made with my 27 inch tall slicks which give me a equivilent of a 4.56 gearing. Well the track just could'nt hold that much gear from my truck. I was launching from idle and at 1000RPM and was burning both rear tires for about 100 feet. I decided to take off the 27 inch slicks and put on a set of half bald stock GOODYEAR 275/60/R-17 radial tires. I figured this would cut my gear down a bit, back to 4.10 gearing. Well it helped a bit but not much!. I had the psi set at about 25psi in the 30 inch tall GOODYEAR's and they still spun for a while. At that time the best 60 foot I could get was 2.5!!!! My truck ALWAYS gets a 60 foot of 2.0 flat. So I played with tire preasure's a bit and got some of my best 60 foots at around 20 PSI. But I was still pulling 2.3 - 2.4's!!!!!!!!! I decided the next time up that I was going to do about a 35 second burnout to really heat up the tires because the track was SO cold on the staring line. Well that run I got a 2.3 60 foot and still ran a 14.52E.T at 94.55MPH!!!!! That's almost 1 MPH faster than my best time of 14.52E.T last SPRING at 93.73MPH. I also picked up close to 1 MPH in my 1/8th mile times as well. Just my 60 foots SUCKED because of the track conditions. I figure if I could of got my usual 60 foot times of 2.0 that I could of dropped 3 tenths off that time! That would of put me in the 14.20's!!!!!! That is with me leaving the starting line at 1/4 throttle and not going to full throttle till after I pass the 60 foot marker, and I still was spinning going into 2ND gear! It was VERY frustrating. So this WINTER I'm going to work on getting a set of 15x 10 inch rims to fit on the back and a set of MICKEY THOMPSON ET STREETS 28x 11.50's, a PRO-M MAF, HOLLEY 80MM TB, and a custom RAM AIR set-up I'm designing. That should put me in the 13's for sure, naturally asperated!!!!!! We'll find out in the SPRING I guess.

P.S : By the3 way there was a guy there that had a "2001" DAKOTA R/T, EC, AUTO. He had a K&N "COLD AIR" FIPK on it, put a shorter belt on to eliminate the power steering and A/C, and he was running a 100h.p NOS kit. He came back into the pitts with a very best time of the day of a 14.59E.T LOL!!!!!! I then came back into the pitts and he ran up to ask what I ran. He figure that my truck would be running around a low 16 second pass!LOL! I then told him I ran a 14.52E.T with burning the tires off half way through 1ST gear, AND I'm still naturally asperated!!!!LOL! That just pissed him off and he did'nt beleive me untill I showed him my timeslip! Even with NITROUS, a DODGE can't beat me!HA, HA, HA, HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!lol!

Hi Neal,

Wow!

Actually, I'm not surprised, as we have figured for some time now that fuel supply is a problem as well as the obvious lack of available traction, so we know better ET's are under that hood of yours, Neal.

There was another Lightning that just hit a best ET of 12.17 in something like 39 or 40 degree weather that posted a few days ago, everybody is responding to the colder air, especially us blower-motor guys.

If memory serves, I thought you hit a 1.98 60" time at one point, but I do clearly remember all of the long string of 2.0's that you've run previously. With a best of 2.3 with those traction conditions, yes, it sure looks like with enough fuel, 14.20's are within grasp.

But then, that's how it always is, in the Fall you don't have the traction but you have the power. Even so, most records fall during the final couple of Nationals more often than not, nothing makes popwer like cold dense air, especially 40 degree air.

Congrats on getting the Mopar that was spraying to get into the 14's!

G-TECH Results on 01 X-Cab w/4.6 auto
Today I ran my G-tech after weighing the truck on a certified scale.

Before anyone wants to jump on me, with reguards to the accuracy of the unit, I'm completely aware on how it works. For those that don't know G-Tech's tend to read a higher MPH, because it measures actual speed at the end of the 1/4, while at the track it is averaged out over the last 60 or 100 feet.

Hp estimates don't take in consideration for wind resistance, while on a fixed unit the is none.(you should get a higher number on a fixed Dyno, because you don't need to overcome wind resistance when standing still) and approx guess would be 3% higher.

The truck was weighed with me in it, and 3/4 of a tank of fuel and thats how it was run.

rear wheel hp run 1......191 auto shift
run 2......179 manually shifted

1/4 mile 16.32@88.9mph
Auto shifted

according to Corrals dyno, here are some numbers

The Corral: Engine Dyno
Initial Readings
READING OUTPUT UNITS
WEIGHT 4760 pounds
TRAP SPEED 88.9 mph
E/T 16.32 seconds
Dyno Readings
READING OUTPUT UNITS
Total Horsepower 266 bhp
Horsepower Used 216 bhp
Best E/T 15.22 seconds
Fuel Readings
READING OUTPUT UNITS
Specific Fuel Consumption 133.39 pounds/hour
Fuel Pump Capacity 80.04 liters/hour
Optimal Fuel Pump Capacity 96.04 liters/hour
Injector Flow Rate 19.18 lb/hr Injectors

I only did one run, I am surprized at the result. I will do more runs and post them here.

Mike:

We've gotten into 'weights' here and that has brought a question to mind. I weigh my 01 L each Fri. nite at the 1/4 mile track--supposidly 'state certified'? With me and 3/8 tank of Texaco93(hitch, spare, and jack removed), this scale shows 4,670lbs on its digital readout. I think it's reading 'low'--maybe by 100lbs? Have you weighed your L on a known, accurate scale?

Dan
