Cool Trussman - you're not the only one !!!

All I have to say is that it was an extremely long day as I started work at midnight but actually up since 9 a.m. on Friday morning and never went to bed till 11 p.m. on Saturday night. 38 hours awake, cool weather, two hour trip to and from the dragstrip ...

AND I now have dropped into the low 17's !!!!!!

Yeap, we had to wait for a couple of hours for the track to dry but we raced. The weather was about 7 C, wind out of the North to Northwest direction which is to our backs going down the track. So far so good, here is the ****ty section. Everyone was having problems hooking at the start line including me. Yes ME, 20 feet long, 5000 lbs truck, 275/60R15 tires and she wouldn't hook good. I even tried Neal's trick by doing a burnout and heating the tires up but it didn't help. Damn !! BUT as the day progressed and I kept an eye on my gear box cover so it wouldn't leak again, the truck managed to pull off a 17.469 at 78.12 mph down the track. This is after a K&N FIPK on the front end, a superchip in the middle and a Raven exhaust on the back.

The previous best time with just the K&N and Raven was 17.781 at 77.32 mph. By allowing the truck to shift on its own, I would launch from idle. 1st to 2nd happened at around 5600 rpms, 2nd to 3rd happened at around 5000 rpms and I cross the finish line at around 3600 rpms in 3rd gear. Sebastien and I were talking and he thought I could just run the truck in second gear but I was about 30 feet away from the finish line and the truck hit the rev limiter. That sucked but hey, just one more thing that I know now. And this is with my 28" tall tire combo compared to OEM of 29" tall combo.

Mike T.: if you read this, do you have any ideas that would be the cause for the truck to shift so high in 1st and not so high on 2nd. I realize that it is about 500-700 rpms but that could make a big deal couldn't it ???? OR is that just the way it is !!!!

Anyhow I had a great time and I think everyone that came along (about 10 or so - total) had a great time even though it was cold. Over the winter I am going to change the manifolds out as my passenger one is leaking at the top, it was warped. I still don't understand why it would be warping for A transmission, rear end oil change at 200,000 kms will happen as well and I might even put synthetic oil in this time since I won't be changing it too often. Maybe even a shift kit set for towing, just incase I have to HAUL Neal anywhere after he breaks something !!

Till Next Year !!!

Hi Dean,

Yes, we usually have the 2-3 WOT a bit lower in codes that you sere in heavier F-150 configurations like your Subercab & long bed, so the engine doesn't have to strain as long to read the last few hundred rpm. It's all about how the truck will accelerate the quickest, do we get quicker accleration by letting it wind all the way out to 5400 rpm in 2nd gear, or do we get quicker times letting it upshift sooner, & take advantage of torque in the next gear, etc.

If you wanted to push that motor with the miles it has on it, you could have us do a custom program to raise the rev limiter & also raise the 2-3 WOT upshift point, that's up to you. That way you could do either one at the track, you could go thru the trap in second gear, or you can just have it shift into 3rd automatically a bit higher.

It sure is a pretty blue truck in that picture, if it looks in as good a shape in real life as it does in that picture, pour it on & put a new motor in it if it breaks!

Yes, she does look as good in real life as she does in the picutre. If money & time off concerns are not a problem, you may see her screaming SLOWLY down the Virginia Motorspeedway next July. The guy that owned her before me kept really good care of it, so I am continuing the pursuit to keep it in as good of shape for as long as possible too.

Regarding the shift points, I was just concerned that it was getting too close to rev. limiter when shifting from 1st to 2nd. We figured that since I dropped an inch in tire height, that it may have changed the characteristics for the shifting a little.

Hi Dean,

Yes, running shorter tires will do that many times with a computer-controlled automatic. What happens is, you exceed the assumed accaleration rate (1000 rpm per second in 1st gear @ WOT in most of these F-150's), and so the transmission just doens't have quite enough time to complete the upshift before the engine bounces off the rev limiter. Same reason why this happens when you install a set of 4.10 gears, or a supercharger, etc.

As long as you aren't bouncing off the rev limiter, then that isn't a problem.
