Which Octane

Hi guys... I have to make a quick decision as someone has a chip for me if I want it. I have a 1998 F150 with the 4.6 L and 305.70.16 tires. Do I have to run super gas all the time with a superchip installed? Im sure this has been asked several times but I am at work and did a quick search and found nothing... Any help qould be appreciated as I have to let this person know today.

All aftermarket chips usually require the use of 93-94 octane gas.

Hi tlapan,

Yes, you have to run premium gas, 91 octane or higher, and 92-93 octane is better. Any good quality 91 octane or higher will be fine. I say 91 octane just in case you're out in California, which has reduced their octane to just 91, most of the rest of the country the octane for pump premum is 92 or 93, here in the East it's almost all 93 octane, and then theres always the Sunoco Ultra 94.

If you try to run a Superchip on anything less than a high-quality premium gasoline, you won't get the power gain, and you could also experience detonati0on, that will depend on the fuel quality & total effective compensation range of the knock sensor system in your particular vehicle, as they do vary, and widely.

Good luck!
