Cool Flats Man's New Best 1/4

Before I get into the details I want to thank Mike T for the great program on my flip chip! Another thanks goes to Crash who noticed that my FMU was hooked up wrong and reinstalled it for me which allowed the runs below. Crash and I were running against each other and He took the time to help me post some pretty good times. The temp was about 55F, no wind, I pulled my class III, and my spare, and had a little over 1/4 tank of gas and ran on my stock 275-60-17's with 24 lbs of air.
60 foot=2.161
330=6.051
1/8=9.287
mph=75.90
1000=12.123
1/4=14.545
mph=93.13

I am very happy with these times but know that they can be improved upon with slicks and some further mods. Good luck to everyone, these 4.6L's can be made to perform!

Cool

HI!... FLATSMAN : Congrats on the new times. I'm still ahead of you by 2 thousanths! LOL! ALL NATURAL BABY!!!!!!!lol! I'm going up to SPARTA DRAGWAY on OCT 20th (see EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS) for my last runs of the year. I hav'nt been to the track since SPRING. (NO $ for further mods, lol) I'm going to see how the new tranny performs and the custom fabricated traction bars I just built. I built 3 sets and are hoping to sell some of them. I just hope it's cold and not windy on the 20TH. I always seem to run my truck when it's 90 degree's out with a ton of humidity. Good times, man.

Neal, how did I know you would be the first guy to jump on this thread? LOL. You better get your blower soon cause I am slowly catching you. After your blower install it will be all over! If you compare our times, we could put on a pretty good run! Take Care.

Flatsman:

From one fisherman(L/m bass) to another, nice times and a beautiful truck(sig). How do you get down to 55 degrees in Florida and it's only been to the mid 60s(on the nites I've been 1/4 milin') here in middle GA? I'm envious--I need colder air!

Lightningrod-I like to fish for BMB but my thing is big mean salt water fish on a fly rod. I got that temp by going out to Texas for the FFW! It was down right cold for a Florida Boy!
Brotherdave-I think the truck is still faster than that time I posted but I will need to run on slicks and tweek a few more things. It is easier to tell you what I would give up first if I had to give my mods away. Probably the Jacobs Ignition because I think the Ford ignition is pretty good. Love the 4:10 gears, Auburn Pro, and Art Carr tranny! You will definitely need some kind of shift kit! I have had a lot of help from every one one the board along with tuners etc so I am no expert but I will gladdly share the things I have learned from others. Good luck and if you have more questions just send me an e-mail and I will be glad to help if I can.

Hi Flats Man,

Excellent improvement in ET, that's well over a 1/2 second drop from your last time out at the track, if memory serves, when the shift points weren't high enough to let the blower really go to work.

People need to remember that this is a big, heavy 4.6 motor'd F-150, and it's a 4.6 F-150 that's running pretty darned good right now, Fred can take a lot of pride in what he's got there. That is a beautiful & unique F-150 that most of us here on F-150 Online would love to have sitting in our driveways, myself included. Fred hasn't taken any shortcuts here, everything has been done thoroughly, and it shows, in looks & in how it goes.

Congratulations Fred!

Thumbs up

That "is" one sweet truck, he actually let me drive it for awhile once before he came to his senses I'd love to watch it run sometime! I'm still dreaming of a Magnacharger, maybe someday it'll happen.,,,,,98

Wow Mike, thanks for the kind words. It almost makes me a little misty. I think with a little more tinkering and some slicks,and a pulley I can get out of the 14's. That run was made on 5 lbs of boost! Your help with my chip made a huge difference and I thank you very much for that. Mustang Works took a cool picture of the truck with my brother, Sixpipes driving.

Hi Flats Man,

That's a *much* better picture. Gee, I just *thought* that truck looked good before, that shot is *excellent*, and it really shows the beautiful & very clean lines of that unique Flareside, my favorite bodystyle. There's just something about Flaresides............but of course, since we own a couple, I would say that!

Absolutely beautiful truck!

And yes, with a bit more boost, tweaking & traction, I can see some easy 13-second passes in that truck's future. Nice job, Fred, take a bow!

Flats Man,

Another way to improve your E.T's would be to lower your truck...

Fast54triton-I have a 2-4 drop on the truck but I agree it looks a little high. I think my brother had just nailed it before the start line because the truck actually jumps when you hit it. We think it is because of the Art Carr tranny but we don't know for sure. I will be working on keeping the suspension loaded at WOT.

Just a couple of tips I've read about before

I've heard weight transfer can be vastly improved by removing the sway bar end links when you get to the track, never tried it myself though. It supposedly lets the front end lift up, transferring the weight to the rear tires. I have driven a car with broken end links before, not exactly fun. Get some skinny fronts to reduce rolling resistance, should help quite a bit. These are about the only two "tricks of the track" that I know, so I'll shut up now,,,,98

Hi Flats Man,

D-oh! You sure did put the weather info in that post, I completely missed it. Yes, those were good conditions, 55 degrees & no wind, etc. are excellent numbers for making power, especially in that blown 4.6

Hey Screamer,

Yes, you can usually improve weight transfer at the strip by removing the front sway bar, however, as you very correctly pointed out, it's no fun to drive it like that, and that could contribute to an accident at the track if it got squirrely, or if you got a gush of cross-wind at the wrong time. This was a trick popularized by the Mustang camp, and can be effective for improving short times, the 60 foot time, & thus 1/4 mile ET overall.

Me personally, I'd never do it, another half a tenth to a tenth isn't worth it to me, although there are plenty of racers that would kill to get another tenth, and I would have too in my days of class car running in NHRA.
