Edge Spark Knock

I am having a problem with my Edge Evo programmer. When it is set to Lvl 2 I get a spark knock when getting back into the gas while coasting. It doesn't happen on the other levels or in neutral. (I haven't tried Lvl 3) I have tried using 89 octane fuel and it still happens. The truck is a 2003 4.6 with no mods, and the only setting I have changed are tire size and gear ratio. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

so it has no mods, yet you modded the truck???

That's highly unusual, especially with the 4.6. Usually when this happens, it's with an aftermarket intake. I think your best bet is to call Edge. You could reduce the timing a little, but if running 89 does not make a difference, reducing the timing probably won't either.

I guess I really don't consider changing tire sizes a "mod". For the gear ratio, it was changed because the Edge showed a different value then the door sticker.

I agree with Jim about the spark knock. I wonder if you have some carbon buildup? High heat range plugs might cause this too.

The Tire Size and Gear Ratio are wrong because Edge uses "placeholder values" for them when you open the Custom Options Menu. If you simply say "no" to the custom options choice, the Evolution will load factory values from the VID section of the PCM, which should give you the Gear Ratio that is installed in the truck and the OEM tire size. There's no real way to use the Evolution to "check" your tire size or gear ratio.

Would carbon buildup cause it to knock only on Level 2? I treated the motor with seafoam not long ago to see if it cured it. I will have to check on the plugs.

Level 2 uses an enhanced fueling strategy and I think the spark is advanced a bit. Either of these could cause pre-ignition if your truck is close to that point already. You COULD try retarding the spark just a bit (try -0.25) in the custom options to see if that helps. As Bluejay said though, that's somewhat like trying 89 octane fuel, which you've already tried. Still, it won't hurt to experiment.

I've read mixed reviews on Seafoam. I don't recommend using it.

My guess is your using crappy gas.. Go Fill up at a Chevron or Shell Station with supreme if you have one around you..Id also get a few bottles of Techron fuel cleaner and dump a couple bottles in there for a tank.. I bet it will clear up

I have been using Chevron or Texaco 89 for about the last 5 tanks so I really don't think it's a fuel issue. While researching Techron I found this:

Could this be the problem?

If it pings under those conditions when running 89, you are running too lean. It should be able to handle some strain without pinging unless you are way under geared. How tall are your tires?

Another thought. Does it ping on when you return to the stock tune? Of not, then something is wrong with that level 2 tune. Level 2 is actually supposed to be a little rich for towing.

The tires are 285/70r17. It doesn't knock on Level 1 or 0(factory), only on Level 2.

Have you tried the highest octane available there (91-93)?

I have tried updating it, and it says there are no updates available. I have not tried 91 octane, but according to the manual you are supposed to be able to run Level 2 on 87.
