Will the Super Chip help me?

I have been reading the message board on computer chips now for a number of months. I have also spoken to Mike Troyer and I have read all the glorious remarks about what the super hip has done for different people. I am not into racing, firm shifts, just pulling power>

My question to all of you who have the chip is as follows:

I am 63 years old with a F-150 XLT, short bed with a 5.4L engine and 3.55 ratio limited slip axle. TI have no other modifications.

I am quite satisfied with its rice and performance on a day by day basis. However, I have a travel trailer which weighs about 7000 # empty. I pulled it to Florida and back last winter and use it on various weekends camping. While I made the trip ok my truck is underpowered when pulling this trailer. My performance issue is simply power when pulling this trailer.

I am interested in comments from those of you who have the chip and use your truck for pulling a heavy load, will it help me in my situation? I will be watching the message board for your advise. Thanks

Hi CAK,
I just installed a Super Chip and Air Force One on my 2001 SuperCrew and I tow a 1968 Jeep CJ-5 it definitely made a different on steep grades added about 5-10 MPH from stock very happy with it. I highly recommend calling Mike Troyer he has all the answer.

See my Signature for my modifications, which were mainly done to improve towing power. Opening up the front end, by doing the simple Airbox mod from this website is highly recommended by myself. Since I did this, I wanted to increase airflow out the tailend, so I replaced the OEM muffler with a Flowmaster 50 series.

You mentioned you are not concerned with shifting, but I would be since you are towing. The quicker shifts improve acceleration and will help your transmission, by reducing slip due to the quick shifts.

Get the superchip, its a must if you have an automatic 5.4L, like I do.

Hi CAK "WELCOME"

I made a post 7-17-01 Pg. 5 Towing 91-94oct. If you havent seen it, check it out. As you may know by now, lots of info. here.

Although our trucks are different, etc. My experience with the superchip, might be of some help to you.

Before chip install, did do exhaust, k&n filter. Engine alittle more responsive, after chip install, using 92oct, it was even more responsive. Not like a supercharger, no way, but a definite noticable difference. Gave me that little extra i was looking for.
The new shifting pattern, i like alot better. I just got stock program, meaning i didnt ask for any special features, just the flipchip 87/92oct programs that Superchips sets up for these trucks.

Had truck, boat, etc. first, otherwise, would have never gotten the 4.6L. You have 5.4L, so thats a plus.
However, the 3.55 rear axle ratio is not the greatess for towing.

Because i did mods in that order, cant say what the chip would have done alone. Others here maybe able to tell you.

Im going on another trip next month, same towing situation, will post those results. I will be paying very close attention to speeds in 2nd gear, However, after chip install, i didnt get into low gear on that trip, definite plus....A recent trip (solo) 70mph 92oct, picked up .90mpg, another definite plus for me. It is interesting.

Thats my story. Hope it helps you out. Good luck. OT
