thanks that helped but what i really need to know is how big are the results of buying one.. i don't want to go spend 400 dollars on like an edge or bully dog to find out it don't do anything noticeable.. so i would really like to hear some experiences other people have had with them to help me decide if its worth the high price

Have you scanned through other threads in this forum yet? Results are going to vary widely. There WILL be a difference, but it also depends on your expectations.

Edge = good
Bully Dog = junk, leave those to the diesel guys
SCT = good
Diablo = good
"chips" = junk

"Custom" tunes always best

Custom tunes are discussed in the sticky thread that I linked........................

You can either get them by taking your truck to a dyno shop or ordering them from one of the "mail order" tuners. They are loaded using a programmer that can accept custom tunes.

You should really read ALL the stickys, there are only 5 of them.

I am on the same quest with my 09 5.4 your older truck will wake up nicely with a good program depending on what you actually want out of it. I have pretty much decided on 5Star tuning and a SCT programmer. When I do it is the next question. A tuner will not pay for itself based on savings so forget that part of the math yes you can get better gas mileage but often by buying better fuel and changing your driving style. However when I did the math factoring in the cost of the tuner and high octane fuel over my 3 year driving avg it cost more per mile to upgrade the truck. However it was only .4 cents a mile and the truck will be way more fun to drive with the tuner so I am going to do it. The leveling kit will cost me another .8 cents per mile so that will happen in the spring when I get my tax return if I get one LOL. If I keep the truck 8 years i will break even and if it makes it to 11 years like the diesel I recently traded in for it I will save a few bucks. However either way the truck will be better looking and more fun to drive every day.

Since none of the tuners will do what my Diesel stuff would do I don't see any gain in paying for a display unit which is what your doing with the Edge. What matters most is the tune itself that will come from the company you deal with. Guys Like 5Star and Livernois dyno tune nearly everything they do so if you give them good info they can build a tune for you that fits you and your truck. Call 5Star Monday and ask them Mike answered all my questions and also pointed out I did not need a fancy display I need a tune that works for me which will save me a ton. If I make changes I can call them and have them Email me a different tune. For me it came down to 3 different custom tunes 2 of which I will seldom use but give me some options if my needs change. As far as HP gains if that is your only concern Nitrous is a great option or a Blower the tune is mostly to fine tune the truck to your needs. You will pick up HP as a result as well as TQ but not in big numbers unless you drive WOT all the time.

PHP will no longer be doing custom tunes for the Edge CS/CTS. They were the only custom tuner for Edge products. However, PHP does do custom tuning for SCT products.

Is it possible he advised against the hardware with gauges since what he sells does not have them? The Gryphon gauges were extremely important to me as the truck gauges are useless. You can monitor up to 4 items at a time. I kept mine on engine temp, tranny temp, voltage, and digital speed.

You know if the fact was I was inquiring about a much more expensive unit that had the gauges and 5Star does sell then perhaps I might think that. I called to discuss the Live Wire which has the gauges and has multiple tune options since it comes with the canned tunes and 6 custom tunes.
