I have a 2007 fx4. I have cat back exhaust and k&n intake. I would like to get a tuner to help it run better and achieve better fuel mileage. Even a step in performance would be nice. I want to keep it simple and not spend a fortune. What is a good way for an average driver like me ?

That's what I meant - a K&N is an aftermarket intake (tube).
