Tuner For 5.4L

Is a tuner worth the money for a 2001 Supercrew 4x4 with 5.4L? Looking to get some performance & torque out of my truck. Shopping for a exhaust & thinking of getting a tuner too if it will really make a difference. If so, what tuner do you guys recommend?

Thanks!

I like my PHP Gryphon. When I want torque, I use a tow tune. When I want performance, I use one of the two performance tunes.

popular devices around here are.....sct xcal3/sf3, diablo predator, edge CS/CTS......etc

the monochrome gryphon or edge evolution is not recommended for your year of truck due to a cable issue...

Diablo

I just got the Diablo Predator and absolutely love the 87 tune. I tow a 21 foot jet boat and hae 35's with 4 inch. It really brought my truck back to life since the tires robbed me of my power. Throttle response is snappy now and I do not see a need for custom tunes in my direct future. Maybe after cold air, pulley's and an electric fan? People talk a lot of about canned tunes but I don't see the problem with what I got. Keep in mind it's a 4x4 and was not built to be raced. My tune added torque, power, and a little better MPG; all that I could ask for.

Good luck with picking the correct tuner.

Maybe after cold air,
You mean warm air? It doesn't get any colder than stock. The air in the fenderwell is a lot cooler than the air under the hood. You WILL need some customization if you get an aftermarket intake or you will be running lean.

I would rather wear a "fitted suit" then a "one size fits all" t shirt......that's the difference between custom and canned tunes....but if yer happy with what you got then go with it....

BTW....a regear to 4.56 will help take the strain off of the drive train those 35's added and yer tranny will thank ya.....

Lots of Fer-by-fers being raced - but, sadly, not yers. You've assured that by adding 35's and a lift, making it a dog. And no where near as good a tow vehicle as it COULD be. Denial is a wonderful thing - keeps us sane

"Pullies, efans and a WASHOOBI" - you got one out of three correct. Only one requires tuning correction

Looks like you need to do some additional research, because all indications so far lead me (and not just me) to believe yer somewhat behind the curve.

A lot of the folks who have, and will soon, contribute to this thread have DIRECT experience with both, and KNOW the difference. You, alas are just blowin' smoke out yer patootie, because you have and do NOT.

Good luck with yer suboptimal canned tuning - you don't know what yer missing, bud. Just stay that way ...

Here - got a light for ya ... designed to assist folks who are perpetually in the dark....

Troyer, 5Star, JDM, VMP, PHP to name a few. There are others but these seem to be the most popular and have proven track records with guys in our trucks who are making serious horsepower.

Ooops - sorry - got distracted and forgot that part.

Here ya go: http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...=226&parent=66

Justin Starkey is the owner and tuner. Terrific flash programmer and outstanding custom tunes.

Just to clarify, it will not do the same for an 01 with the 4 speed and 2v heads. It adds nice power, but probably about half that on a 2010.

Yes, I know that! That is why I said it was a 2010. I like superchips, I think he should go with that
