Superchips 1865 for '04 STX

I was looking to get a cheap superchips (SCT?) 1865 tuner for my 4.6L 2v. Can I download custom tunes onto that model? If so, from whom? I have a Gibson Exhaust and a CAI system. The vehicle is pretty old so don't bash me on going the cheap route. Just trying to look for a bit more power.

An 1865 cannot run custom tuning.

Get a proper flash device than CAN house custom tuning - www.vmptuning.com - SCT X3 Model # 3000.

Far better gains, and future-proof.

Be advised - on a 2V, especially the 4.6, you will need to run premium fuel and tunes to match to make worthwhile gains in power. The driveability and shifting improvements however, are immediately noticeable and a huge set forward - worth it all by itself, I feel.

Superchips and SCT are separate companies.

Thanks for the helpful and quick response MGD. I have no problem using premium to achieve the gains. Haha I will no longer assume that SCT stands for SuperChips Tuning

MGD, haven't seen much as far as charts go for MPG or power increase on the 4.6v 2v. Really hoping the custom tunes will help along side my CAI and exhaust. Even 1 mpg may be worth $400 in the long run. I plan on keeping my truck for quite some time now.
I read RAB7 on my firewall. Does that seem right?
Lastly, I plan on getting 87 economy, 87 tow, and 93 tow. Do these custom tunes take long to ship with the programmer?
Not worth it if it takes a year to arrive!!

Hey.

Yep that's a valid code for a 4.6 2V PCM.

Has your PCM ever been reflashed by a dealer? If so, the actual HEX code with the PCM may not match the one originally associated with the above 'Box' code. ( The dealer tech is supposed to afix a sticker with the updated calibration if the PCM was reflashed, but this apparently is not always the case).

In that case, what you would do is have you programmer shipped to you ASAP, blank, and use it to read the full HEX code, email that to VMP and wait for yer custom calibrations to arrive via email for you to load with SCT's utilities (utils downloadable from SCT's site).

Justin can walk you through it; there are also detailed instructions on his site.

VMP's turnaround varies, like everyone else's. Call/email to determine what the lead time is currently. It's usually not bad at all. And there is always the EXPEDITE option on the order form for those who simply cannot wait, lol. Extra charge, though.

Mileage is, at the end of the day, almost 100% governed by yer right foot.

Good luck. These tunes are worth it.

Pulled the trigger

Well just ordered my x3 3000 with custom tunes. Many thanks to you MGD. Can't wait to get it! Used promotion code X3FREESHIP to save shipping cost.

time to try it!

Well got the tuner and I love it! Very easy to use. Since I had 87 octane in the tank I tried 87 tow first. Man, what a beast this truck is now. Never knew my little 4.6 had it in her! Test drove that for a while then switched to 87 mpg since I am going on a trip. Actually loaded it twice since I thought I loaded 87 tow again! Still has more power than stock, and with a good amount of testing, hopefully more mileage. I will run a few tanks with it. Looking forward to see what my 93 tow does!
All in all a very happy camper. Many thanks to MGD for his great insight as well as the wonderful customer service from VMP.

I recently sold the F-150 to a buddy. The 87 eco tune added 2 mpg! I was planning on getting a car but I couldn't pass up a '98 Eddie Bauer Expedition. Can I use the SCT X3 tuner for the 5.4L engine? The tuner has 3 tunes in it already, but I was wondering if I could replace one of them. Just need a 87 Eco tune for it. Are they worth it on the 5.4L?
